Re: Pearson 303 Stuffing Box Flax Size?

Ended up going with prop speed for the prop coating, others in the yard highly recommended it. I'll see in the fall but it is a 4 step process so not for the un-handy crowd.

Re: Pearson 303 Stuffing Box Flax Size?

Thank you. That is a good idea to check the other pieces. I went to the store and 3/16 looks smaller so I purchased the 1/4 as it was the closest match. I will see if I can fit three rings in side and if not I'll go with the 3/16.

Any suggestion on what to coat the prop with since I had barnacles last year?

Much obliged

Re: Pearson 303 Stuffing Box Flax Size?

The packing size is determined by the outer diameter of the shaft and the inner diameter of the stuffing nut. Without knowing these dimensions it is a guessing game.
Chances are though that 3/16" or 1/4" packing will work for you.
We have a 1" od shaft and our stuffing box takes 3/16" packing (NOT 1/4" which is too tight).
You should be able to get 3 (or more) rings of packing into the gland before tightening it.

While you are working on this area of your boat you might also check the cutless bearing & shaft for wear. Also check the shaft log hose to see if it needs replacing.

Hope you get in by June 1st.

Pearson 303 Stuffing Box Flax Size?

Since Sandy destroyed our Marina and it still isn't ready I've been doing many projects this spring. After re-bedding all the deck hardware (Thank you Mainsail) with Butyl Tape I've take the stuffing box apart and removed the Flax. Does anyone know what size it is and how much is needed? Looks likes it was one stand of flax in the fitting. Is that right or is more needed? It was dripping 60 times a second when running and could not be tightened further so it did need changing.

The engine is 2GMF 13hp. I do not know the shaft size, but I will be going to the boat to remove the prop and and replace the sacrificial zinc.

Thanks in advance. i hope to have Free Will in the water by June 1st since the Yacht club launch is now available.
