Re: Climbing mast using Prussik

For those of us who are not 20 or 30 or 40 or 50 something anymore, it is amazing how fatiguing climbing a mast can be. Any system has to allow one to just dangle and rest and should not excessively use just one muscle group. The bike tube thing uses only one leg and would exhaust me at the spreaders. Notice he did not video that part. I have only used the ATN and even with it, I was exhausted going all the way up and had to rest several times going up and descending. Also, I used a Prussic for a safety line on the other halyard and it seemed to work well, but just Prussics? Don't think so.

I kind of like the French guy's homemade system, but you would have to unhook at the spreaders and it would be pretty hairy trying to re attach with one had while hanging on with the other.

If the bike tire tube somehow failed you would not plummet straight down.

I have one of those top climber thingies and a bosuns chair. Have not yet tried the top climber.

They aren't prussic loops. Not sure I'd trust my life with a bike tyre inner tube either!

Re: Climbing mast using Prussik

OK, I admit, all my prusik climbing was over 20 yrs ago but I really did climb over 1000' on prusiks from Golundrinas (deepest pit in the world). Still, prusiks are so cheap, basic and easy AND they work on wet muddy rope when mechanicals do not.

Re: Climbing mast using Prussik

A couple of ascenders make the climb easier than prussics. Second the rec for a Gri Gri.
The system works well but not necessarily easy unless you are in good shape (I'm 62 and it's a workout getting up our 55' mast).

Joel H. Personaly, I would invest in a second generation Petzl GriGri at minimum, then use a prusic on a footloop to climb the main (the GriGri locking in the gain), and a prusic on the Jib Halyard as backup.. FWIW
CHEERS,
JOEL H.

Re: Climbing mast using Prussik

Key thing with a prussic is to make sure that the ratio between the diameter of your prussic line and the line you are climbing is correct, if your prussic is too thick then it won't grip. I've used them for years in rock climbing, and been up the mast a couple of times, personally I'd trust them over a mechanical system.
It's easier if the line you are climbing (typically a halyard) is held fairly taught.

Re: Climbing mast using Prussik

It's easy, I've climbed thousands of feet or rope in caves and my own mast many time with such a system.
