Re: CAL 36 mast compression beam

Wonder what the OP finally did, if anything?
I'm looking at a 1968 Cal 36. The beam looks like it's in pretty good shape, though it does show some corrosion around the cable hole. The owner thinks it's aluminum. I doubt it. Thoughts?

Cal Sailboats

Not much around on the 39 BUT i would think the builds and having to hack the boat apart are fairly similar

Howzit Guys,
Try look for Tom Mays posts about changing his compression beam on a 2-29. He did extensive, good work. Try a search in the Cal forum. Good luck.

Re: CAL 36 mast compression beam

I have a similar issue. I am restoring Cal 39 toll rig and the still beam is rusted and I need to replace it. There was this guy in my marina, he replace the beam in his Cal 29 where he has to cut out the fiberglass under the compression poll.

I am having difficulties finding any blueprints/drawings of the steel beam for 1971 Cal 39 Toll Mast. They only built 22 of those boats between 1970 and 1980.

I am digging on the Cal specs quite hard and will let you know if I come across anything

CAL 36 mast compression beam

Hi,

I have a CAL 36 sailboat, recently I discovered that the steel beam under the compression post and fiberglass is partially rusted. Only access is from the bilge and the port side locker.
I didn't know that the mast is actually "sitting" on a beam across the bilge? I discovered it when I traced a hose under there in the bilge and found rusted metal pieces.
It looks to me that it will be a major project to replace or repair it?
Anybody with experience on this? I'd appreciate any advice!
Thank you!
