Yeah Baby! I took a hot shower even though it is 90 outside. It was a long shower too! I have all the lights on except the anchor light. I cranked the air conditioner down to sub freezing without sniffing diesel. Every hatch is closed. I am going to wash the dishes and rinse the plates without the stopper in. I have all the internet i want. I am taking out fatty without cranking the outboard.

Yep... I am at a marina! Woohoo! God i live civilization. I might even wash the boat tomorrow after i get back from the pool and order a pizza. Aint you sailors jealous!!!

Hehehe.

Just wait 'til a boat-load of college students throw an all-night bash to celebrate the end of the semester, on somebody's dad's boat, in the slip right next to you. ;)

I could use a good dose of uncivilized right bout now. Its been too long since I got in-touch with my redneck/country side.

Brian, I know how you feel. I'm usually on a mooring, but I've been briefly at a local marina for the past month for maintenance and refit. I cherish the running water, shore power, and step on access. It's a fleeting opportunity that I try to take advantage of.

Sounds great, are you tied to the dock long?
We try to spoil ourselves with a weekend at a dock ever so often but I haven't used my AC system in 2 yr, I'm not even sure where I put the shore power cord.

I do have a sister in the area and I can do laundry and showers there plus she feeds me when I help with the honey do list.

Yeah, but where are you based out of? Our Low when I left was in the low 80s (83 I think) and zero wind... high in the 90s. Shut up the boat and cook. Open it up and get eaten by noseeums. Pick your poison!!!

Luckily we had a generator. I finally gave in and started running it for Air Conditioning. Love the generator, but also love being on the hook. I actually like being on the hook more than the ball. Probably just me though.

Brian, are you tied up at the Marathon City Marina? I was there for two months, on the bulkhead in front of the office - it was great. Short walk to the showers, fired up the air when needed, and when it got cold, I switched the heat pump to heat. Loved it. Free internet connection, too.

It was nice when I had visitors, especially Mario and Sherry. I met lots of nice people in Marathon, and some that were quite colorful as well. I loved to watch Captain Jack walk around the marina with a handful of flowers, giving one to each of the ladies every morning. Jack had his 91st birthday while I was there and still lives aboard his 28-foot boat.

Currently, it's just 44 degrees here, Mario and Sherry are probably snuggled tightly beneath several layers of blankets, and tomorrow's high is only supposed to be in the lower 60s. Damned I hate winter!

Good Luck,

Gary

Hey Gary,

Nope. I am tied up at Marathon marina (not the city marina). THis is the first marina you see to port right as you enter marathon. We have a long relationship with them and they always treat us right. I may have to start shopping marinas though. A year ago I paid $17/foot and thought that was too high. A few months ago, I paid $19/foot and thought that was ridiculous. They just upped it to 21.5/foot!! Plus, they also started charging on Overall Length, not LOA. So they are supposed to charge you from tip of anchor to back of davits. Easily rake up close to a $1000/month here. Tough on a cruising budget. On the positive side... well, they have a great pool!

But you know what, who cares!?? I have AIR CONDITIONING!!! Yippie!! And the weather here SUCKS right now.

I ended up only buying a week... at $575/week. Think we will be moving back out to the ball soon!!

As far as the colorful characters: totally agree. They are there. We had two toxicologists (retired from NIH) offer to help home school the kids on Biology. We have met several cruising-kid boats! THat was actually why we moved out there as no kid boats come to this marina (probably cause it is too damned expensive). We say hi to Capt jack (Me and the kids call him Cap'n). My wife has a plethora of flowers from him (he hasn't given me one yet... apparently he doesn't know my reputation on SN as the best looking moderator). We also had some old bearded fart tell the kids (rudely, vulgar) to be quiet because they made too much noise (so I told them to crank up the TV on Cartoon Network and go blare it). I can be a sadistic bast***.

I think we are down to our last few days here. We hope to start our travels north in the next week or so. However, the plan now is to winter in the mooring field every winter if not in the Bahamas. It is a great community. There is NO community i the marinas. Just retired people or those with insane amounts of money... and zero kids. Lots more I could write about it and plan to on our blog.

Take care Gary!!!

Hey Brian. I went sailing last night on LRH. Left Chandlers headed for the dam. Sailed all the way down to Rush Creek and never touched the tiller. It was awesome. Just as we got everything put away, it started raining and rain all night. We're only 3 feet low now. :)

well, I feel sorry for you to sleep 10 ft from your neighbors, smell their last nite dinner & their farts, hearing their snores and erotic moans. Unfortunately, it was not a pretty image in your head.
Get out while you can. :D

Wow! I guess I'm pretty fortunate. I live out in the sticks, nearest neighbor's home is 300-feet away, no smells from last night's dinner, no snoring sounds - just the owls screeching in the pine trees a few feet from my bedroom window. As for erotic moaning stuff, I'm sure I've heard that sometime in my life, but damned, I can't remember when or why. ;)

Cheers,

Gary

But Brian, you left out the most important piece of info ... how far do you have to walk, um, stagger to get back to the boat after stopping somewhere for a beer? (since you don't need the dinghy and all)

#17 ·
Aww J,

I got the spots all figured out. With my beer budget, it doesn't take long or a sailor might go thirsty. There is a place actually at Marathon Marina called Lazy Days. From 3-6, everyday, it is like $1-$2 beers and 3 shrimp/$1 or $3.95 for a plate of calamari. It also sits right beside the pool that overlooks the ocean.

I order Chase 2 dozen shrimp, Glen a plate of conch fritters and calamari, and me a keg. From there, supper is done and I can wobble back to the boat.

On the high-end nights (you know, a sailor's white linen cloth kinda thing), we take the dink over to Burdines. $7/burger (good burgers too), a basket of fries and hush puppies (very very good btw), and a few tall Miller Lite's. I drive to the restaurant. Chase drives back. Life is good, Baby! Life is GOOD!!

Brian, I spent a few afternoons sitting at Burdines in the shade of the overhang, sipping a brewski encased in one of their yellow huggies. I have one on the boat that was given to me by one of the waitresses for singing "The Wonder Of You" for her one afternoon. She loved the song, and my voice, so much that she came to the Tiki Hut at the City Marina every Saturday night after that just to hear me sing. Nice lady - good looking too. :)

The rates at the City Dock were outrageous, but that time of year, everything in Marathon is overpriced. If I recall, the price-tag to tie up to the canal bulkhead at the City Marina for my 33 Morgan was $757 a month, including taxes, water, internet and electric. Pricing | City of Marathon Official Website

One of the things that enticed me to stay in the canal was I was able to easily offload my music equipment from the boat to the bulkhead. When you're an old codger, loading and unloading 200-pounds of bulky, expensive equipment is a shaky proposition if you're trying to load it onto a finger pier. The bulkhead was easy, and the height of the Morgan's gunwale was just about even with the bulkhead, so it was just a matter of pulling the boat in tightly against the pilings and lifting the gear from the cockpit to the adjacent bulkhead/dock. I wouldn't even consider dinghying the gear from the boat to the dinghy dock. It's not that the dinghy couldn't handle it - but it only takes one idiot to hit you with a wake to destroy $7,500 in electronic music equipment.

Gotta look into Marathon Marina for the next time I make the trip,

Gary

Don't look to this old man for money - I had too much fun pissing it away in Florida and the ICW. Since I've been home I've performed music jobs nearly every day, and the first check just came in the mail today. It will take me a few more months to get the cash flowing, then you can talk to me about loans. ;)

Cheers,

Gary
