Re: Chartering smaller sailboats? Where?

I just sold my Cal 29 that was timesharing, but the guy I sold her to is offering her. I have a Cape Cod Blue Chip 30 I'd possibly timeshare. I do 16 days for $1500 on this full keel Herreshoff. Check out blog at marcthesailor.blogspot.com/

Well, it is no where near the Chesapeake, but if you happen to be in Northern Wisconsin, Superior Charters has an IP27 currently in the charter fleet. They don't have any sub-30 foot Pearson/Alberg, but they do have a Pearson 31.

Re: Chartering smaller sailboats? Where?

Thanks for all the replies.
As for the last post, I don't think it is an 'apples and oranges' issue- it is merely that I like both boats as was wondering where/if I could get more time on both to make my decision before I buy. So, I wasn't asking 'what you think of the differences in the boats' (which evidently you feel is an 'apples and oranges' issue) - I was asking if you knew where I could charter same and I got some helpful answers to that specific question. Thanks all!

Re: Chartering smaller sailboats? Where?

that's apples and oranges. those are two different classes of boat the 70's alberg/ person is a sub $20K and the IP 27 is in the $35K to $40K range and 1980's. realy depends on what you want to spend and the condition of the individual boat. for me the IP is a way cooler boat

That's pretty awesome. I was assuming there would be a slim chance on finding an IP in a rental. I have checked all around SoCal. I have only seen one place that rents any boat under 37' that is not a hunter or Catalina but those are older Cals Newports and Shocks. Also those IP prices are cheaper than the Catalina's here in SoCal.

Re: Chartering smaller sailboats? Where?

You might find that some local charter/sail clubs may have one of those boats in stock to rent per say. But as pointed out, MOST larger charter companies only keep boats up to 5 yrs, then they may move a given boat to a lower priced seperate division for another 3-5 yrs. then at least ones like morrings or sunsail, will not rent those boats out.

There is one company in Florida that ONLY charters IP's. Not sure if there would be a 27 in that fleet or not. As I am no sure/positive IP still makes a boat in the sub 30' range.

Re: Chartering smaller sailboats? Where?

I agree with poster 1. What you need to do instead is find someone with these boats and offer them money to take you out sailing.

Re: Chartering smaller sailboats? Where?

I am no expert, but I think you will find this difficult, because:

(1) charter companies tend to only charter new/newer boats. I am sure there are exceptions, but the main reason why is that older boats have older parts, and therefore carry an increased risk of breakage/maintenance. Charter companies don't want to deal with that (both in terms of time and expense).

2) Charter companies tend to have larger boats. 30' is generally the minimum, often the boats are lager. This is mainly due to supply and demand; the demand for chartering a 27' is low; generally people want to charter 32'-low 40s' (based on anecdotal experience). And, of course, larger boats are more expensive to charter, thus more profitable....

I think that your best bet would not be to try and charter a boat, but to go to local yacht clubs and ask around, An owner would likely be willing to take you out to convert you to his "cause"!

Good luck.

Chartering smaller sailboats? Where?

I am looking to charter a smaller sailboat, like an Alberg 30 and an Island Packet 27, so i can decide which one I prefer.
It seems like al the charter companies only charter larger boats.
I am trying to decide which boat to buy and it is between one of the older, Alberg/Pearson 1970's era smaller sailboats or an Island Packet 27.
Any one know where I can charter a smaller sailboat on the east coast of USA?
