blt2ski Can I have said boat, but about 35' in length overall, with 6.5-7' of draft. Not sure i am worried about draft here in Puget sound!

In the mean time, I'll dream of an X34 or 35, Dehler 34R, Summit 35 among others, or maybe a Jeanneau Sun Fast 3200 if I can talk spouse into a bit less interior plushness..........

Interesting.

I like the idea of below deck furlers for much the same reason as I like below deck electronics for a windlass. Getting anything out of the weather sounds like a good idea to me.

As to the perfect boat.....this is my current fave.....no way known I could afford to build her but it works for me on so many levels.....

TQA OK I will stick my oar in this one. Just won the lottery, my next move would be to phone Henri Amel and to order a AMEL Super Maramu. Henri is a cruiser's cruiser and he has been building boats for cruisers for years. He builds one model and there are no options, he just fits everything you need.

A truly luxurious, go anywhere, world cruiser with no exposed wood to varnish, wheel in the right place and a bulletproof reputation. Down in Martinique with the Christmas winds blowing they will be coming round Diamond rock after crossing the pond or beating up from St Lucia in comfort with a dry cockpit and leaving the big Benes in their wake.

Just off to the 7/11 for a ticket.

Jeff_H My thinking on the below deck furler had to do with issues with the interaction between ground tackle and the furler drum as well as being able to use deck sweeper headsails. The drum (as well as the windlass) would be accessible through the rope locker lid. This was a coastal cruiser and so I wanted to be able to use sails optimized for coastal use. This description was probably written roughly 10 years ago. There are somethings that I might do differently today.

I have to ask, why a below deck roller furler? To my unexperienced ear, that sounds like something I'd want to be able to get to real quick if it quit working while I was trying to take in sail, and below the foredeck is a cramped place without the benefit of knowing what's going on above.

What did I miss?

G- We chose our boats based on what we want and need, and that, is what makes it perfect. I accutually have to disagree, a little. I have yet to find the right boat, however, I often find the boat for Right Now. As I continue to learn, as my family changes, and my desires for sailing change, not to mention my bank account, I regularly find boats that would be a great next boat. That doesn't mean I don't think my current boat is great, just that I like a lot of boats, even yours G- !!!!

Cruisingdad Just one note: I do NOT believe Catalina makes the perfect boat for me... just a good boat for where I am right now. All boats are a compromise... and what you said is quite true Giu.
