Have you checked the dipstick again? On my boat, if the engine has been running, and then shut down, the next time I pull the dipstick it will be bone dry. I still remember the first time I did that. I felt an electric shock as I thought "Oh crap, my engine is dead." I put the dipstick back in, pulled it again, and like magic, the oil level was right on. Happens every time too. First I pull the stick, then re-insert, and then I get an accurate oil measurement.

This happens on both my Universal M-25 and also on the M-21 in my previous boat.

This is caused by the oil stick tube being sealed air tight, and the lower end of the tube being below the oil level. When running or just oil slopping around the tube will drain and there is no way for the oil to get back into the tube due to the airlock. Also happens on some Isusu's. This can result in overfilling the sump. You add a quart and check it and it's still looks low.You can repeat this several times. Be Careful! Yes, I know from experience. Messy!!

Amazing how you can figure stuff out from crawling around and looking.

Thanks for all the suggestions they were helpful. First I found out where all the oil went, right into the bilge. I have an impaired sense of smell so I did't notice anything really wrong. Due to some suggestions here, I got of cup of water out of the bilge and it was black.

I have a oil change pump permanently connected mounted on the engine. The other day I changed my Racor filter and must have knocked the intake hose off the oil change pump. It leads directly into the bottom of the oil pan. With the engine running the hose was low enough so the oil must have shot out the hose straight into the bilge.

So while I am embarrassed by my operator error, I am happy to note that to fix this I just need to do a lot of cleaning, reclamp that hose securely and will be back in business. It could have been a lot worse.

Typically Diesels have a fuel return line going back to the tank. If the engine has high crankcase pressures from worn rings my guess is this would be the likely source of oil in your fuel.

Could you please explain how the engine oil gets into the fuel if a hose to the oil filter fails? Otherwise I'll have to go with my initial reaction, which is that this is complete nonsense.

The oil system, and the fuel system, are two separate sealed systems, and I can't think of any place where they meet and are separated by a component that could fail.

The exception is if an injector jams open you could get fuel in the oil. But not the reverse.

as mentioned above by others if checking oil with a hot engine wait a good 5-10 mins for it all to drain back into the sump especially in an older engine which might have slightly clogged oil galleries etc

silly question but you are using a grade of oil specifically for Diesels of the recommended viscousity? ie shell Rotella 15w-40.if you put the thin ie 5w-20 non diesel stuff used in modern close tolerance automotive gasoline engines your diesel will consume at an alarming rate.

there is a lot more that will fail on a diesel to disappear oil than in a gas powered car. you may find something you donot expect.

Hey,

As mentioned, that's A LOT of oil to lose in only an hour or two of running. In fact, I would be really surprised if the engine could BURN that much oil in a few hours. Most small auxiliary engines burn less than 1 gallon / hour of diesel. If you can your engine for 2 hours I would expect you to burn around 1 gallon of diesel and you burned more than a gallon of OIL!

I assume that you checked the engine and you are not leaking the oil? I would expect to find a broken oil line and a gallon of oil in the bilge. If you can't find any massive oil leaks then I would suggest filling the engine with oil (to the full mark on the dipstick) and then running the engine at cruise RPM for 15 minutes. Shut it down and see how much oil you lost.

If you are really burning a quart every 15 minutes then, as others have suggested, I would expect a big engine problem like cracked block, broken rings, or cracked piston.
