I can "steer" my boat with my cell phone when near the head unit on my old autohelm 3000 LOL

Probably a Long shot, but you might want to check your 12 volt cable runs...
On our former Niagara 26, we had originally run the AP power cable thru the stern laz, beside the coax for the stern-rail-mounted vhf antenna.

No problem until one day I keyed the mic and the boat turned sharply to starboard!
Later, after confirming the cause/effect and looking over the installation, I moved the wiring apart and solved the problem...

Re: Old navico tiller pilot 2500, anyone about them?

On our prior boat, a 26 footer, we had a Navico 1600, and then later a Navico 2500 (it was faster, lock to lock).
Both worked well, and back in the 80's this was a wonderful way to free us from constant steering on long days on the water -- a veritable miracle device!

Those early tillerpilots did not "interface" with other electronics, but Navico had available- optionally - a hard-wired remote which allowed you roam a bit away from the cockpit and control it.
They used a turn-dial compass control and there was a way to vary the response time, i.e. "sea state" level of reaction.

If your friend has the actual tillerpilot and the little ss stud that mounts on the tiller, all that was needed otherwise was the socket to mount in a seat or combing for the pilot to drop into.

He will need to wire up a power supply to that part of the cockpit with a water poof outlet to plug it into.

It is a stand-alone device and does not connect to any other instruments.

I've a friend that just got one for next to nothing which it seems to be worth. But, I told him I'd see if anyone knows what autohelm was used with it and if anyone knows the hook ups or if it could connect to other make units like Raymarine. thanks!
