I hear and obey MS! Can I find a meter that will fit the old Stewart Warner size? I remember reading your discussion on Universal's engines but thought it applied to the 3 cyl engines.

Denise... Do yourself a favor and get rid of that ammeter and alternator wiring that runs there and back before your boat develops serious issues, like a FIRE...... It looks as if someone did a bad-aid fix and used pliers on the battery cable crimp. You can leave one wire there and replace the ammeter with a simple volt meter. Just jump the alt directly to the starter post with a short piece of sufficient wire and lose the "there & back:" run.... Oh and the wire nuts......

Anyone who owns a Universal engine with an ammeter should move this to the top of the to-do list... These ammeter circuits have been the cause of horrific battery charging issues as well as numerous fires.

Oh! don't you know! The old key switch now works like new as it's here in the living room and I'm playing with it .... Go figure LOL the key is/was very very loose.

Looking at the back of the panel the key switch is lower left. Yeah.. it needs some TLC back there.... "someday"

and installed a radio shack 12 volt LED I guess that is for the blower switch even though there isn't a blower in the engine compartment.

Up date! Success! difficulty level = 2 on scale of 10.

Disconnected ALL batteries.
Looked closely at terminals on old switch and new; yes the same. "Bat, I, S"
I also serves for things that need to be "on" when the key is on. Fuel pump, gauges on the engine panel etc...

It was slightly terrifying turning the switch with the new key.... 2 battery banks...

Brian, yes that is what local WM had "on the shelf" hard to believe LOL Now to tackle the job.. all those wires.... such small terminals.. makes me start wondering if it's time to "clean up the mess" LOL

At pretty high prices usually. Cole-Hersee ignition switches are good quality and inexpensive as well. They actually make switches while Volvo, Yanmar, and other engine builders source them elsewhere and then sell them at ridiculous prices.
