Yeah, and this is further complicated by the fact that some later Catalina 22 sails have the more modern Catalina insignia, which is even more like the Capri's.

Sounds like JeffH got it figured out though. Have fun with the new boat.

We really lost a great resource when capri22.net went offline. Patrick wherever you are, I hope you had a backup...

Cool. Enjoy it, they are nice sailing and zippy little boats. You may find that you want to race it too.

My mistake - it was a Capri sail. I'm going to buy the boat. Thanks so much for everyone's responses. I have much to learn.

Just an FYI: masthead rigs can still have adjustable backstays and their masts can still bend, it's just different because of the location of the forestay. My Catalina 22 had an adjustable backstay from the factory.

Are you sure it has a Catalina 22 sail? Did the seller say so? The logos are very similar, you know, and as mentioned above, one way to tell if the rig is correct is fractional for the Capri vs. masthead for the Catalina.

Re: Catalina 22 sail on Capri 22

The Capri 22 (designed in 1984) is a fractional rigged boat manufactured by Catalina as a racer/cruiser. The forestay does not go to the stop of the mast, but only 3/4 - 7/8 of the way. Sailboats with fractional rigs usually have a bendable mast and an adjustable backstay which allows one to bend the mast, thus flattening and depowering the mainsail.

The Catalina 22 (designed in 1969) is a masthead rig designed as a trailerable cruiser. The forestay/headstay goes to the top of the mast. The mast is rigid and the backstay is not adjustable.

A boat may be rigged with a mast from another boat. Sails can be interchangeable and flown on a number of different boats, as the dimensions allow. However, a mainsail from a masthead rig will likely be cut differently from a mainsail from a fractional rig and may not be as efficient or adjustable.

On this boat, the owner may simply be flying a sail from a different boat, or the mast may have been switched. Does the forestay go to the top of the mast or only 3/4 or 7/8ths of the way? You could also haul a measuring tape up the mast with the jib or main halyard and note the distances to determine whether this is an original mast.

Re: Catalina 22 sail on Capri 22

When you raised the sail did it go to the top of the mast? A too short sail with the proper mast should show 5' of empty mast above the head of the sail.

A greatly smaller sail (5' shorter) is like having 2 reefs in. This will likely result in a boat that doesn't balance well unless the headsail is also smaller than designed for.

Catalina 22 sail on Capri 22

Thanks for the helpful responses to our search for a boat. We recently sailed a Capri 22 that is for sale and really like it. The boat appears to be in great shape; my main concern is that the mainsail is a Catalina 22 sail and not a Capri sail. According to the spec sheets, the max hoist height of the mainsail on a Catalina 22 is 21'. The Capri has a maximum hoist hieght of 26'. This makes me think that the boat may have been dismasted at some point and now has a Cat 22 mast. Otherwise, how would the Catalina sail fit on the Capri mast? I know enough to know that I know very little. Please let me know if you think I am worrying about something I should not worry about. The sails are in good shape and I am not racing the boat although I do worry about what happens when I go to sell it a couple of years from now. If the "fix" is simply installing a Capri mainsail, then it's no big deal. If the fix is a new mast, I'm still looking for a boat. Thanks!
