What are the advantages/disadvantages of the Garman VS the Raymarine?

It is a mount that I designed a few years ago. Prety simple to build and very "symmetrical" looking for those customers who don't want a gawdy looking pedestal and a giant white box blocking their view.

It often requires a taller pedestal guard so I often use the Nav-Pod SG-10 1" straight guard.

It is simple to build:

*Cut the overall size you want the platform to be out of 1/2" Starboard

*Drill two 1", 1 1/8" or 1 1/4" holes (depending upon your guard diameter) 9.5" on center

*Buy four 316 SS "clamp collars", in the size you need, from McMaster Carr. 1" 316 Collar is part # 9633T19. They make them in 304 but they will rust faster even after polishing.

*Use a buffing wheel on a bench grinder and tripoli compound to polish the clamp collars (they come "mill finish")

*Pick your radius corners and cut them using a flush cut router bit and a template for the radius

*Use a round-over router bit to chamfer the edges for a nice finish.

*Slide the upper clamps on

*Slide the mount board on

*Slide the lower clamps on

*Mount the plotter bracket

*Drill the holes for the wires

*Drill a 1/4" hole in the guard tube

*Use the 1/4" hole as a guide for a Lenox hole saw to make hole bigger

*Use a dremel to smooth hole edges inside and out of the guard leg.

*Buff guard leg around hole with buffing wheel

*Adjust desired height and lock the collars down.

*I also replace the crappy black plastic Edson feet with the newer SS style

That is a well done project that has been beautifully photographed. Thanks for posting that.

I saw one of these units at WM the other day and it is very slick looking and behaving! The pinch to zoom feature is amazing to all of us who have smart phones! It's funny to see how that feature has become an "expected" one when using any touch screen device. The charting looks good and everything looks intuitive. I must say that my wife took a look at the price and hauled me away... I think somewhere around $1700?

I am wary of a unit that is all touchscreen. In rough conditions, you might require 2 hands (1 to operate, 1 to steady or brace) and you would smear suntan lotion on the face as you use it. I have a Raymarine e7 and its taking me a long time to get used to how it functions; I think my old Garmin was much more intuitive. But I am getting there. I still can't find a ETA feature on the e7. It is very fussy exporting routes from comp to e7 too. Didn't mean for this to turn into a review of the e7. Just think about features and look into the units processes thoroughly.

Nice neat installation. Not a fan of touch-screens though, hard to operate in anything other than perfect conditions.

I shudder to think how a comparison of my best v MS's worst would turn out.

The New Garmin 7" Plotters Are Shipping...

After months of promises and missed deadlines Garmin finally shipped the first batch of their new 7" plotters.. I got my first one a little over a week ago and am just getting around to mounting and installing it.

I have been quite impressed thus far with it. I have all three wires that will be connected to this plotter, N2K, Power/NEMA 0183 and Radar all run in a single leg of a 1" pedestal guard with room to spare. Course like anything the radar and N2k ends need to be cut off and field replacements need to be installed at additional cost.

For size comparisons this is a 1" Edson pedestal guard.

Sorry for the poor pics using the point & shoot...

Nice simple & clean screen:

Very thin profile:

Multiple options including a CHIRP sounder. Unfortunately no Garmin Marine Network:cussing Connected are Radar, Power/NEMA 0183 & N2K:

The wire organizer slots in the mount base are kind of cool:
