Re: Spring lines and cleats

I use the bow and stern cleats for spring lines.
For single handed docking, I've got some lines rigged in the slip that will "catch" the boat before it runs into the dock and I come in nice and slow.
I've also got a line I can run to one of the stanchions and use that to grab a dock cleat. But you can't come in hot with that.

I agree with the shrouds. However, winches are designed to take a load from a specific direction on a narrow plane. In fact, they usually must be angled, if the load is not going to be within that plane.

I suspect the shear strength of a winch works 99% of the time as a bollard, but not what they were designed to do and an extraordinarily expensive experiment.

Re: Spring lines and cleats

Well being a newbie to sailing I appreciate all the help I can get... There are cleats just aft of the winches I can use those. As for the mid ship... I was rummaging through all the cubby and plastic bins and I found one of the loop. Made from brass that slides on the jib track so I guess I'm set.
