Re: Sailnet Changes Poll 1

Leaving the sub forums has barely won. There may be a couple (like Piracy) or other sub forums that I remove if they are not used.

Otherwise, most will stay.

Poll closed.

Re: Sailnet Changes Poll 1

Sub-forums should probably be policed and pruned for usefulness as a normal maintenance function... not as a big earth-shaking change.

John (PB) is on the money. when the most reliable way to search SailNet is to use Google then something is wrong. The search function is an utter farce.

Re: Sailnet Changes Poll 1

I suppose this could also be one of those questions that is conflicted. Readers could completely misunderstand what reduce or eliminate sub-forums even means. If one took that to ask whether we should have zero sub-forums, with everyone posting to one single forum, it would naturally get push back. There is a big difference between reducing forums and eliminating them. Those in favor of a reduction could vote no, to avoid a complete elimination.

Re: Sailnet Changes Poll 1

SailNet is filled with valuable content that should be easier accessible.
Rather than worry about cosmetic changes, I think easier accessibility to past content should be a priority.

I'm not a programmer, so I don't really know how feasible it would be to set up a more easily searchable data base, or at least make the current search function more efficient. Or perhaps a FAQ. Even a way to make people more aware of the Articles section would be an improvement.

Re: Sailnet Changes Poll 1

I have always been a fan of having more action on forums. The reason to have a forum is to group people together to share what they know, creating a critical mass that draws more in to it because of the excitement it generates. Subforums dilute the action and detract from the critical mass. People might be interested in discussing an engine problem, but if it's posted on the A4 subforum, only the people with Atomic 4's will answer - though the problem may apply to any engine, and many people might have bee able to help.

I voted, but caution this approach.

It has twisted shorts before to be asked for a democratic opinion and then "ownership" may vote it down.
