Re: Favorite Sailing Song

I never listen to music while sailing, but I do maintain a couple playlists of Yacht Rock and assorted nonsense for use in nautical contexts: Sailing Playlists | Sailing Fortuitous

None! I sail to be away from man-made noise.

That one makes me thirsty for Guinness. Not sure I'd wanna sail to it but worth trying sometime.

Re: Favorite Sailing Song

This was my favourite this year.

Gordon Lightfoot sails (or sailed?) in the same area as I do. Christian Island is one of our destinations.

We sail through endless skies
stars shine like eyes
the black night sighs
The moon in silver trees
falls down in tears
light of the night
The earth, a purple blaze
of sapphire haze
in orbit always

While down below the trees
bathed in cool breeze
silver starlight breaks down the night
And so we pass on by the crimson eye
of great god Mars
as we travel the universe

Re: Favorite Sailing Song

There can't be any one song to capture the sensation of sailing, as sailing can be any one of a number of sensations.

There can be frivolous celebration, pastoral tranquility, and stark terror -- sometimes all on the same sail!

For dieseling back to the dock with a hard-earned beverage in hand, "Ocean Man" by Ween is a silly little dance ditty.

If you have ever been mesmerized by the sight of a sailboat gracefully dancing in the sun (and who here hasn't?) then obscure New Age stuff like Phil Thornton's "The Height Below" can be a fitting musical accompaniment.

Sorry I am not allowed to post links, but both are on the YouTubez

I'm kinda partial to CSN Southern Cross and Van Morrison's Into the mystic, two of the songs I play.

Re: Favorite Sailing Song

Whatever I happen to be singing at the time, which can be any of 3,800 songs that I perform. I found myself singing Jimmy Buffett's A Pirate Looks At 40 this past Sunday. When you're a singer, and a nut case sailor, singing while underway is just kinda a natural thing to do. If the rig breaks - it breaks. Ain't much more that I could have done about it anyway, Zee.

All the best,

Gary
