Rereading this thread I forgot, I used to sing my 6month old little girl to sleep with Jimmy Buffet's "Nautical Wheelers." She's turning 13yo next month. Time really flies.

Didn't know Gordon Lightfoot did "Christian Island," which was a song my father used to sing a lot while sailing. I didn't appreciate Dad's taste in music then... I think I may have misjudged.

Many of the aforementioned songs are on a 16 gig flash drive plugged permanently into my stereo aboard.

I used to have many of you folks rule against "man made distractions" under sail. I sometimes still follow that rule, but I sail on an enclosed puddle mostly, and sometimes with beverage in hand, like some music to go along.

That being said, I plugged in the same playlist while in the BVIs and my music selection varied from TV Themes, to Ballads, to Country, to Brass Band... while individual songs, raised an eyebrow or two here or there, the playlist was considered more than acceptable by everyone. So apparently I am not alone in wanting some background music while sailing, and sometimes even while sitting at anchor

Re: Favorite Sailing Song

This is from the movie The Dove, went to see this when i was 17 and it captured the sense of freedom i felt when sailing.
Sailing has been a lifelong passion since and I often think of this song.

Sail the summer wind

Cool Change by Little River Band

If there's one thing
In my life that's missing
It's the time that I spend alone
Sailing on the cool
And bright clear water

Lots of those friendly people
They're showing me ways to go
And I never want to
Lose their inspiration

Time for a cool change
I know that it's time for a cool change
Now that my life is so prearranged
I know that it's time for a cool change

Well, I was born in the sign of water
And it's there that I feel my best
The albatross and the whales
They are my brothers

It's kind of a special feeling
When you're out on the sea alone
Staring at the full moon like a lover

Time for a cool change
I know that it's time for a cool change
Now that my life is so prearranged
I know that it's time for a cool change

I've never been romantic
And sometimes, I don't care
I know it may sound selfish
But let me breathe the air

Yeah, yeah
Let me breathe the air

If there's one thing
In my life that's missing
It's the time that I spend alone
Sailing on the cool
And bright clear water

It's kind of a special feeling
Out on the sea alone
Staring at the full moon
Like a lover

Re: Favorite Sailing Song

I think it really depends on the mood of the body of water we are sailing on. With something like 30gb of music, we have lots of choices.

The cheesier the better....

I'm sailing away, set an open course for the virgin sea
I've got to be free, free to face the life that's ahead of me
On board, I'm the captain, so climb aboard
We'll search for tomorrow on every shore
And I'll try, oh Lord, I'll try to carry on

I look to the sea, reflections in the waves spark my memory
Some happy, some sad
I think of childhood friends and the dreams we had
We live happily forever, so the story goes
But somehow we missed out on that pot of gold
But we'll try best that we can to carry on

A gathering of angels appeared above my head
They sang to me this song of hope, and this is what they said
They said come sail away, come sail away
Come sail away with me
Come sail away, come sail away
Come sail away with me

I thought that they were angels, but to my surprise
They climbed aboard their starship and headed for the skies
Singing come sail away, come sail away
Come sail away with me
Come sail away, come sail away
Come sail away with me
