I've owned the boat a little over a year. I've had to adjust the packing nut three times to keep the drip at a reasonable level. My intent in changing was that I thought the packing was worn down and I wanted to replace it with Goretex packing, which I used on a previous boat and found to be virtually dripless. For now, I am going to keep adjusting . Thanks for your comments.

Why are you changing the packing? if it not dripping excessively leave it alone. The boat designer did a bad job, not leaving enough room to do maintenance. I have 1984 tartan 28 with original flax packing. I observe the temperature and the drips per minute. Turn nut each year as needed. Still sailing.

Welcome to sailnet! Uh.. cut the shaft? Seems a bit extreme. Is she in or out of the water? Photos? (we all use a web based photo site and post the direct links for photos here)

If the engine to shaft coupling is like most. it's near impossible to remove off the shaft without a purchased or homemade type of bar and bolt "puller" (actually pushes the shaft out)
Some people slide the engine forward. Some won't/can't/abhor the thought of dropping the rudder to get the shaft out and pull the engine! Some say "f" it and cut the shaft!

Oh.. NEVER use a slide hammer to pull the shaft or a hammer to drive the shaft back in! Sure way to damage the transmission.

Anyways... if your going to cut, pull, chop or drop; think new cutless bearing also. and motor mounts... and ... and ...

Tartan Piper 28 Stuffing Box Maintenance

I'm trying to replace the packing on our '92 Tartan Piper 28 but there's not enough room to pull the nut far back enough to pull out the old and put in the new. In talking to the boatyard and looking online it seems the only option is to cut the shaft and redo everything.

I also found there are some alternative methods when putting it back together using a PSS shaft seal or a split coupling to make access easier in the future.

I'm curious if there are any other Tartan owners that have run into this same issue and what they found worked best.
