Hello all.

Iam considering a repower. The boat currently has a perkins 4-154 in it. I was talking to an engine remanufacture shop and they said that they only rebuild the 154 on request as the rebuild kit is so expensive. They reccomended a cummins 4b3.3 as an alternative. it produces 65 hp at 2600 rpm and 55 hp at 1800 rpm, and it only costs 1700 $ more complete. Has anyone had any experience with the cummins ?

Cummins vs Perkins

I don't know about the Cummins marine engine, but their 4bt & 6bt truck engines are outstanding. I don't believe Cummins' factory does the marinization of their engines, so there would be concern with the reputation of the 3rd party shop. Would the Cummins be better than the Perkins? I believe they would be at least as good if not better. Parts for the Cummins should be more readily available, that's for sure!

Has anyone even heard of this engine being used in a boat ? sail or otherwise? Does anyone know if there is such a thing as a chat forum about diesel engines? Mabye I could check there. the engine sounds very suitable based on the data that the company that marinizes them put's out (trans atlantic diesel)
