Re: Cradle with wheels?

I'm curious - Do you plan to move the cradle by hooking it up to a car or truck, or just by pushing it. If you're just pushing it, make sure you have a way to stop it!

Jhock,

You don't by some chance own a Knickerbocker sailboat, do you?

Re: Cradle with wheels?

A couple mobile home (modular home) axles under the cradel will work...you don't even need the springs and hangers, just "U" bolt them to the bottom

Usually $75-$100 a pop for axles and $25 ea for tire/wheels...

Re: Cradle with wheels?

I built a cradle out of 10x 10's and steel joint plates under the 22 ton boat on the tidal grid in Skagway and floated the whole show on to a flatbed for road trip to Inuvik. In the North we just drag the rig in and out with a cat before freeze up.

Re: Cradle with wheels?

When I had to move my cradle from one yard to another after buying the boat, I rented a U-Haul car carrier and it fit right on there nicely. I think there's a number of types of trailers, including flatbeds of course, on which you could secure a cradle. That's what I'd be looking for. No need to reinvent the wheel.

Re: Cradle with wheels?

jhock, if a trailer is kept on private property and never used on the public roads, there should be no requirement to register it.

But once you start talking about swiveling wheels, and crossing that up with a "trailer", you're going to get expensive. Swivels or casters are usually designed for very low speeds and not robust enough to be used on trailers, where much greater speeds and loads are involved. Trailers generally have only fixed wheels, for a rea$on.

Sounds like whatever you're aiming at is going to need brakes, too.

Re: Cradle with wheels?

Try to find bigger casters - moving this kind of weight on rough concrete can be a challenge for small wheels. And I would make all four of them swivel as this makes the cradle easier to move and generates less wear/stress on the wheels.

Re: Cradle with wheels?

That is actually exactly the sort of thing I was thinking about, two of the rigid casters and two swivels. In the end, I suppose they wouldn't be less expensive than a used flatbed, but the assembly would take up less space in the lot and wouldn't need to be registered.
