Re: Windows in a jib....

Well I opted to NOT get one. Talked to the manufacturer and he basically said it's a personal preference thing.. This is on my 155 load path sail. I have to admit, I have to sit low side to see around the beast. Since I usually am only racing with it, there are several of us "watching" around it. NO doubt a window would help. But for the reasons stated here, the windows can easily create problems something I wasn't real keen on for a new sail. You can kind of see why it's a problem here:

Re: Windows in a jib....

My current boat has a window in the roller, it is definitely helpful when sailing singlehanded. I didn't know it was there, previous owner never mentioned it, and I couldn't see through it due to it looking like the rear windows on a jeep soft top. Without much hope I started cleaning it with soap and water and surprisingly it cleaned up real well and allows a good, if limited view.

Re: Windows in a jib....

Windows are not uncommon on race boats,, but in that case the sails.are usually plastic to begin with. You do need to treat them with care, and avoid crinkling or folding them. If they do get damaged they are easily replaced.

Having said that,, you should definitely take your sailmakers advice as to whether it is right for YOUR sail.

The reality is that you will always have blind spots on a sailboat. Personally I would rather live with them than give up sail area and shape to have a bit better visibility.

Re: Windows in a jib....

I have a furled 150 and when in a crowded area with other boats I do not run it out all the way so I can see under it. I have been on boats with a window and some of them are not very clear anymore. Next 150 will be under cut some.

Re: Windows in a jib....

My sailmaker was a bit reluctant to put one in my jib, as they wear quickly and aren't very strong (his opinion). However, if you really need to see where you're going, it seems like a good solution.

An even better solution is a high-cut-foot jib, mine is 100% but I could go a bit bigger.

Windows in a jib....

How many have had sailmakers put a clear window in your headsail? I have a pretty bad blind spot with my 130 and it seems that would really solve it.

If you have one how does it hold up?
