Martin, When did you go? We are crossing the Pacific next year and appreciate 'local knowledge'

Re: Some let downs in South Pacific

we spent 6 weeks in Galapagos in 01, only the 2nd year it was open to cruisers, very different back then, we went every where without a guide. Got 90 day visa's. Dove with hammerhead sharks, we asked for forgiveness instead of permission on mot things. Not everything was as regulated. The masses who have moved there to cash in on tourism are ruining it for all. also the unregulated fishing...increase in trash etc, etc, etc.

We spent very little time in Papeete, knew it was a big city with all it's problems. Marquesas and Tuamotus the highlight, met some great folks on small, un visited islands, stop looking at charlies charts...things get a lot more interesting.

Tonga wonderful. Fiji even better. Think it keeps getting better the farther West you go....

Some let downs in South Pacific

I was so excited to see Galapagos. Not anymore. $1000 (about) just to check in. Poor anchorages (Isabella ok). Can't do anything without a guide. They were generally non-interested, just take your money kind of people. Place is not even that pretty. Water not that clear. For sure would not do it again

Tahiti. Wow, again I was excited but Papeete is noisy, traffic jammed, and without character. Very few places with beach or anchorage. Overall a waste. Moorea and the other islands nice however

Upside, Marquesas and Tuamatu's fantastic. Suwarrow (northern Cook) very cool. Am Samoa ok, Samoa very cool
