I'm not sure I am of the same mindset. After a few days of 25knot winds, quartering seas, lots of salt spray , 50 degree days and 40 degree nights I really enjoyed a steaming hot shower. I think I'll suffer with the hot water heater for a while longer since it was great to have on the 6 day Maine cruise I completed yesterday.

This month I removed the water heater, the surge tank and all coolant hoses. I was happy to get rid of the stinking monster. I installed a short cut in the potable water hoses. I also plugged the two ports in the coolant pump housing with 3/8” plugs I got from the guys in my local Yanmar shop. New engines come with the plugs installed. They take them out when installing a water heater . I still have the surge tank and the bleeding valve available. If somebody wants them please contact me with a private message.
Presently I am installing 4 golf cart batteries following Brian’s (S/V Indigo) solution. I am still in awe that he figured that out. Brian, big thank you for your help.
Earlier this month I installed two 85W solar panels, and, being a fan of proven solutions, I followed Dave’s (S/V Swan) design for the support framing. All worked very well and me and my dock neighbors like the easy looking structure. Dave, big thank you for your help too.
Finally a thank you to Raindog because if you would not have started this thread, I would still be trying to figure out a solution to my energy improvement needs.

Thanks. There are many Yanmar parts suppliers around here, I'll probably just try them first. If not Tacoma Screw may have them.

I'll add that parts list PDF to my other pile of Yanmar stuff, it is a handy reference.

You are correct, it is "metric" or actually Japanese Industrial Standard JIS B 0203, which is identical to British Standard Pipe or DIN which the Japanese adopted some time back. That's why the drawings indicate "3/8" because the thread pitch is actually measured in inches. But it is not the same as US NPT pipe thread in either pitch or taper angle (I was wrong). Very confusing but the right plugs are readily available. The Yanmar numbers are correct, but may be more expensive than from other sources like McMaster Carr (I love those guys).

I believe everything on the Yanmar is metric. I bought a 3/8 bpt metric threaded plug from McMaster-Carr, but you might be able to find something at an auto parts store that carries parts for Japanese vehicles.

Hi Alex,

You're right, every time I look at that loop, I want to plug it. Just lazy I guess. I think those are 3/8 pipe thread plugs, not metric. I believe the Yanmar part number on a 2GM20F is 23871-030000 (same for both), but a Yanmar dealer can confirm.

I'm back on this project now that I'm back from cruising.

I have a Yanmar 2GM20F. I inspected my system last night and figured out what I'd need to do. Is the proper threading for the plugs documented anywhere? That seems like a cleaner solution than looping back the hose. The Yanmar 2GM20F workshop manual didn't list the threading, and I'm assuming it is metric and so not easy to find locally.

I struggled with that one too. There just isn't a good spot. I will probably install it in the same compartment. Although i have thought about putting it in the engine room too, because it will keep the cable run short and you will probably never run the charger and the engine at the same time so heat shouldn't be a problem. I don't plan on using the charger much though. With the solar panels currently installed (100 watts) I haven't needed a 110v charger as they keep both battery banks topped up.
