Nice-absurd. To paraphrase Victoria's negotiation:

Me: "Given all the stuff that we saw at survey, I think that we need to take $7,000 off the price."

Broker:"I already told the seller that if he wanted to sell the boat, we needed to reduce the price by $11,000. He agreed."

One of the best deals of my life, worth every cent.

Re: What's the most absurd seller statement you've heard

I saw the add in the paper and called the owner, asked the usual questions and got positive answers. Drove an hour to where the boat was docked. As my wife and I were walking down the dock the owner says "did I mention that the boat caught on fire?". Well, no, he had not mentioned that. Turns out the boat had a major explosion and the cabin was destroyed. The cabin did not even have a hatch. We still laugh about this one.

I always like the 5 & 10 year old surveys. Why not add that the boat was brand new 35 years ago?

A lot of this stuff is in the same category as "That'll buff out".

Second hand but when I was talking to my surveyor he told me about one owner while he was surveying the boat for a possible buyer told him that he aligns the shaft each time he goes out. After the surveyor mentioned something about a stuffing block.

" I don't have the title, but it's real easy to get one."---- Well if it's real easy, why don't you get it????

Re: What's the most absurd seller statement you've heard

On the phone with a seller of a Vagabond 17' the seller referred twice to the "really nice 20 hp. Honda motor." I actually had to convince her that it was a 2 hp. I've never heard "meticulously maintained" and "excellent condition" so much in a 5 minute conversation. The boat appeared to be decent, but the seller had absolutely no clue what she was selling and continuously danced around when it was last sailed and the status of the title....

Re: What's the most absurd seller statement you've heard

it was working well the last time I used it.
After about 50 of the same answers we decided not to bother with it.
But knew the person that bought it. and sure enough I guess it all worked the last time he used it but not any more.

Re: What's the most absurd seller statement you've heard

I looked at a "turnkey" Seafarer 26 a while back, that needed a lot of work. The owner said he had it out in 50 knot winds without reefing. "We were heeled to 180 degrees!" I said it must have been a bit dampish. "No, it's a very dry boat." I still regret not buying that boat.......
