Thanks everyone for replying. Thanks especially, Stu, for the article references. The Main Sail "article" was especially helpful.

This is one of the best things about this forum. Friendly folk offering good advice and personal experience. Thanks again!

Re: Battery Switch

On our Tanzer 28 we had two deep cycle batteries. One was "1" and the other was "2". When we came down we started it on "both" and then left it there.

Like Johnny - on our IC34 we have two deep cycle in parallel and a third, a "spare" (only if we need it battery). The two in parallel are "1" and the spare is "2".

Re: Battery Switch

You can have either two batteries (or banks of batteries) - each one capable of running your house 12v systems and starting the engine; or have one battery for the house and one battery dedicated for starting the engine. Deep discharge batteries are preferable for house needs and starting batteries are preferable for starting the engine.

I recently had two identical large deep cycle batteries on my boat - one was battery 1 and the other was battery 2. Couple of years ago, I wired these two batteries togther, effectively making one double-sized battery and installed another dedicated starter battery.

Battery Switch

Okay, this is obviously a newb question, but here goes:
My S2 has a place for two batteries and a switch with positions for 1, 2, 1 and 2 , and off. Should I be using one of the batteries for the "house" battery (lights, etc) and the other just for starting the engine? Should the batteries be the same type and size? How do others have their batteries set up and use this switch?

Thanks. I have a lot to learn.
