Re: Temperature and water clarity of the Delaware River

I can only go by my pool. I do not get in unless the water is in the 90s.. I think I used it for all of a week this year.

Yes, I hate the cold and have not used airconditioning in over a decade, this summer has felt like fall since the 1st week of august

Re: Temperature and water clarity of the Delaware River

I think this summer has been much cooler than the last several. I don't have empirical data at my fingertips, but I think the average temp this summer for the Philly region will be lower than normal. I also think it was wetter than many/most recent summers. The fresh water, more regular water movement, and lower temperatures may have helped with the water clarity.

Re: Temperature and water clarity of the Delaware River

Turbidity levels on the Upper Chesapeake have drastically lowered due to the high flow down the Susque ... all spring and summer long. (its been one of the wettest springs and early summers on record !!!!)
I live quite near the Delaware R. just south of Easton, both the Lehigh R. and the Delaware and all their tributaries have been quite 'high' for the same time period.

Temperature and water clarity of the Delaware River

The Delaware River up near Philly peaked this summer at about 75F. This is about 10F less than the past two summers, when water temp went up to 85F. Water clarity is also much much better. I can easily see the prop and skeg on my outboard, and can see down about 2' on my transom mounted rudder.

My guess is that the lower temp has suppressed algae growth. I have seen no blooms at all. The river currents have always broken up blooms, but in past summers you could see remnants of broken up algae blooms in the river.

I am not sure why the lower water temps. My guess is that more rain in the upstate reservoirs has kept the water management people spilling cool water into the river watershed. Plus, generally lower temperatures overall (only a few days hit 90F).

How have water temperature and clarity been in the Chesapeake, LI Sound, etc.?
