Re: Aftermarket Antenna for Raymarine Chartplotter??

One thing to watch for is how you connect to the chart plotter. I have an E80 plotter and a Raymarine GPS unit that talks to the chart plotter via sealink (I think).
The E80 has NMEA in and out but there is only one speed available. If you have AIS via NMEA then you want 38400 baud and the standard GPS units are 4800 baud and you are screwed.
I have no idea what your plotter has for inputs and outputs, I am just pointing out possible gotcha's. The previous owner of my boat hooked up the VHF to the NMEA feed from the plotter. They also hooked up the AIS. They got te AIS working but the VHF never did have position information. I am not sure if the previous owner ever noticed that little detail.

In that case, the fleabay one would do the job as long as you can physically wire it to the plotter.

Got any marine consignment/used stuff stores near you? They are great for this sort of thing, I picked up a Navionics GPS "puck" for $10, found the pin-outs online and it's now connected to my new VHF to give position info for the DSC. The advantage of most of the marine type GPS units is they take 12v not 5v, and are also usually weatherproof.

It does not have a built in receiver, but takes NMEA GPS data. Thus, it is not an antenna, but a complete gps receiver that you need. So any receiver that provides NMEA out may be used, you may get cheaper ones, than the Ray. You may even use cheap gps modules, just be careful, they usually work with 5V supply and signals. You need to solve this and waterproofing.

Aftermarket Antenna for Raymarine Chartplotter??

It depends. I'm not familiar with your plotter, but typically, GPS antennas are active requiring power to an amplifier inside the antenna. It's usually 5vdc and can be measured across the center pin & shield of the coax connector. If you have multiple wires instead of coax antenna cable, yours will probably encompass the GPS antenna and receiver. The GPS data is sent to the plotter in this case in some format, possibly NMEA. Again, I'm not familiar with what you have.

Aftermarket Antenna for Raymarine Chartplotter??

Hello,
I recently bought a Raymarine RC530 Chartplotter. It didn't come with a GPS antenna so I am now looking to track one down. Has anyone had any luck with an aftermarket or different manufacturers antenna/receiver? The Raymarine antennas seem to go for about $300+ which is a little steep for an antenna.

How about something like this? Marine GPS Receiver FOR Raymarine Chartplotter 425 C70 | eBay
