xort That is my ballpark estimate, including haulout, unstepping, launch and restepping.

Search out M and N transport, they are the class of the field in boat transport.

xort We were planning on leaving Detroit mid Sep for the Erie...then hurricane Irene closed it for the season. Chicago was our decision. We left Chicago October 1sr. We would like to have left 2 weeks earlier but it worked out fine. The biggest issue was getting off the big lake in late September.

How much will it cost to stay in TC another winter? 10 grand puts you in Mobile in 2 weeks! Or spend next summer in the North Channel and then down the Erie in September.

Just wondering if we are leaving too late. It looks like we may be ready to leave Traverse City in a week or two, hoping to get to Chicago the first of October. Wanted to leave earlier but we have to be ready . What do you think?

xort We did not have the Ohio River chartbook. Its only a short run. See if you can download the needed pages for that and print them out. I think it was only about 4 pages. There will be a very new lock on the Ohio so old charts there will be innacurate.

xort Check with Green Turtle marina on Cumberland Lake for chart books. They make a good stop with a courtesy car. I think they are the first fuel after Hoppies.

Most advise to skip by the lock at Kentucky Lake/Tennessee River, off the Ohio. The lock tenders make things difficult for pleasure craft, they want that for the barges. Go further up to the Cumberland River and then you can cross back to Kentucky Lake/Tennessee River after you lock up into Lake Cumberland.

We have charts coming for the Ill. River and the Mississippi to the Ohio River. So making some progress. Looking for that lower part now. We have the GPS and a good electronic chart for the IPad that goes the whole route.

I'm not sure if they are making the paper chartbooks anymore. You might be able to get the Tenn-Tom books at one of the marinas on Kentucky lake. You will also need the book for the Illinois river, and the Mississippi from St. Louis to the Ohio.

The books you will need for the Tenn-Tom are- Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway, Tennessee River to junction of Black Warrior and Tombigbee rivers. Mile 450 to mile 217. and Mobile Alabama to Junction of Black Warrior and Tombigbee Rivers at Demopolis, Alabama. I printed out the pages for the Tennessee river from the Ohio to mile 450 at Yellow creek.

The books are really handy to have. You will probably need to find some of them as used books on amazon or ebay, but check with the marinas along the way. I like the Light House Landing Marina near the Kentucky Lake Dam, mile 24 and the Paris Landing Marina,about mile 54 .

I suggest you look up all the lock and dams and call them on the phone before you get too close. Many have changed their names recently, and they don't respond to the old name. They also sometimes monitor different radio channels. It really speeds up the lock time if they can be ready for you. Be sure you have about 3 large bumpers, and 2 long lines on each side of the boat. A couple good, solid boat hooks will come in handy also. It's not that hard normally. I handled my 31' ketch by myself without too much strain. There are also 3 bridges on the Tenn-tom you will need to call for them to raise.
