Homemade exhaust riser mixing elbow

Hi all, I am about to replace the riser/mixing elbow on my Yanmar 3gm30 and I found this chap who built his own. It looks like a logical and cheap solution! Has anyone out there created one of these?? Let me know please what you all think. I am not trying to simply be cheap, just looking for options to this seemingly common problem.

I did mine on a volvo 13.5 with schedule 40 galv from ace hardware....cut a hole for inlet pipe...welded it together...3 coats hi temp rustoleum and some exhaust wrap...about $40 and my time....used original flange from previous and so far (1 season) its holding up nicely....better than $400 for a rusted and used piece I would have had to rehab ....

I have heard that galvanized pipe in the hot section will give off an odor for the first few hours.
Standard black iron pipe is fine for this application. Neither brass or bronze are USCG compliant for this though.

Lots of info about this on the Moyer Marine "exhaust system" sub forum. People rebuild their hot sections all the time.

Have made a few over the years out of SS pipe and fittings, with good results. (had the services of a decent welder)

Faster has the best solution but black iron pipe (NPT) fittings work well too . only tough part is welding flange and 1/2 pipe nipple at the right angle for water inlet. Know that hot salt water can cut steel pretty quick so acute angle into exhaust is best. Use thread filler with high metal content (never seize) and make two at same time and spare gaskets. Stash one for the future.
