Re: Congrat to Bob Perry

I called Nathan Rothman today. Nathan was the guy who started Valiant and I owe my Valiant success to Nathan. We were both 28 years old and full of ourselves. We have stayed the best of friends over the years.

Nathan is long gone from the boat business but he was very happy to hear about the CRUISING WORLD recognition.

Interestingly, one of the first investors in Valiant was Jeff Brotman. Jeff went on to start COSTCO. Seems he was pretty good at spotting a good thing. He had the faith to back a couple of young guys with big ideas. I thank him for that.

Zeddy:
Uncle Mick was my mother's twin brother and the "wild one" of the family. He was very creative. He could "buy" warts off you. If you had a wart Uncle mick would give you threepence for it and in a few weeks it would be gone. He was married twice which in those days was pretty rakish stuff.

83:
look on the port quarter, right under the cap rail about 48" forward of the centerline of the stern. Say 48" to 72". Itr's tucked right under the caprail edge.

Forsy:
Glad to hear you like your boat. Many thanks for the kind words.

Easter:
I consider the I-28 one of my best designs. Thanks.

Re: Congrat to Bob Perry

Congratulations Bob,

I have not had the pleasure of sailing a Valiant 40. I AM grateful for the earlier double ender you honed your skills designing. We still enjoy your I-28. Glad to have one of your designs. There are so many.

Thanks,

Down

Re: Congrat to Bob Perry

Congratulations Bob. Well deserved... But I am biased.

I fell in love with a Valiant 40 when I was a kid - it was moored near my house - I didn't know what sort of boat it was but thought "one day I'm going to buy that boat"... And 6 months ago and 20 or so years later I did.

Bob out of interst - is there somewhere on the hull a place with the hill number printed? It is a 1978, built by uniflite.

Agan - congratulations. And keep the photos of the boat dogs coming!

I for one would like some more details on Uncle Mick.

Re: Congrat to Bob Perry

CONGRATULATIONS, BOB! You have designed a bevy of winners.

I have sailed one of your lesser known designs, the Golden Wave 42, for the past 25 years. She's still a delight to me every day, and is now readying for a two-week voyage to the SSCA Gam in Annapolis.

She's come thru every kind of sea and weather thrown at her, and has delivered me and my crew in safety and comfort, making a solid 160 nm per day over tens of thousands of sea miles.

Best wishes to you and yours, and THANK YOU for yet another terrific design,

Bill

Silvio:
Many thanks for that.
It makes me happy to have my life's work recognized by so many regular sailors.
I celebrated tonight by having a fancy dinner with my favorite gal.

Re: Congrat to Bob Perry

Many thanks you guys and gals.
I don't have hardware on my mantel. I have photos and flowers.
I doubt that CRUISING WORLD will give me anything for this but the honor and privilege.
That's enough.

Re: Congrat to Bob Perry

I would have voted for the tayana 37, but I'm slightly bias since I've own one for over 25 years. Thank you maestro!
