You might want to take a look at - CA- los angeles Wind Data before your next trip. Also, for better seas, get away from the coast. The seas lessen as one gets into deeper water.

Here is a site that gives you real time sea conditions:

Northern California NOAA/CDIP Buoy Data

There is also a link for So Cal locations on that page.

A lot of the "inconsistent" wind you saw was likely due to being in the lee of Malibu. Once you get around Point Dume the wind tends to be stronger and more steady. Try leaving MDR and heading SW, out into the bay. Once you get away from the Malibu coast things should even out quite a bit.

what's with the Sea state off the Ca coast.

My girl and I recently bought a cal 28. We've previously chartered 28 and 32 ft. boats in MDR each time we've gone out the waters were very choppy and the winds were very inconsistent. Being relatively new to the area I'm wondering if these are "normal" conditions or have we just been unlucky. I of course checked the Marine weather broadcast numerous times prior to our departure and got w=WSW 10-15kts w=2-4ft at channel is. and 10kts or less w=1-3 at MDR. Also we stayed mostly inside 3 mi. except for a run to anacapa.
