# 1 in what kind of sailing. #1 in amount of sailing or quality of sailing, #1 in amount a money spent on sailing, #1 in year round sailing because it is not the two you added. who cares a long as there is water and wind and it is 80 degrees and no humidity. don't even care about those things if you can enjoy it with the people who matter.
Given the options and my limited experience I voted for San Francisco.
If there had been an "other". I would vote for which ever city/body of water your boat is in.
Namaste.
I agree with Cutterdad, wherever you happen to be able to get time on the water is the best place.
I was told by a dealer in Deltaville, VA that Deltaville has the largest concentration of sailboats on the east coast. If you're not familiar with Deltaville, it's not near anywhere. It's about 2 hours outside Richmond, and 3.5-4 hours outside DC and Baltimore. It was almost 6 hours from Philly. I think that speaks to it probably being a pretty darn good place to sail.
I've lived in Ft. Lauderdale and Annapolis, and Ft. Lauderdale definitely has more sailboats, but there seemed to be a lot more people actually sailing in Annapolis.
There are very few places where sailing is as central to a town as Annapolis. Newport is like that. San Francisco and San Diego have a lot going on, but they are much bigger cities so it isn't as concentrated.
While sailing is an integrel part of Annapolis, and I sail there/ near there frequently, it really isnt as integrel a part of the town as Newport, especially to its economy.
Annapolis is the state captial of Maryland, and one of the five capitals of the United States. It is a center of business and commerce and also has the naval academy and a tremendous amount of history. If all the sailboats left for Baltimore tomorrow Annapolis would survive easily.
Thats not to say it isnt a great sailing community and doesnt have one. But the dog is not wagged by the sailboaters tail in Annapolis
Polls of this nature are fun, but not very practical. I voted for SF because that's where all my time is, but I hear the East Coast and the Great Lakes are great also.
Miami is many times better than Fort Lauderdale for saililng. Biscayne Bay has anchorages, protected sailing (bay), interesting scenery. Fort Lauderdale is just boring ocean/coastline...up and down, and its bumpy and rough since its open ocean sailing.
