Nope, couldn't find any maker information on there. Anyway, what I suspect had happened is the vang had been left under load for a looong period of time. The piston is a hard rubber and I think it had compressed and expanded sideways causing it to jam. I eventually got the end cap out, got the piston out and sanded it down a bit, cleaned it all up, regreased and reassembled. There was not a hint of corrosion anywhere.

Did you ever figure out what kind of vang it was? I just got a can of Kroil and that stuff really does a good job on rust.

Re: Rigid vang seized

We could try it, and if it works, then it can go back on mine

Re: Rigid vang seized

BTW, does anyone know what maintenance is recommended for the Garhauer, to keep it working nicely?

Re: Rigid vang seized

I'm sure it would work just fine if we put it on my boat.

Aha! A few engineering taps and it's moved a bit, of course I can't get the piston out again now, but I have at least managed to get some penetrating fluid behind the piston seal etc so might free up eventually.

Re: Rigid vang seized

It's in my shed at the moment. I might just have to rig a line one.

Re: Rigid vang seized

May I suggest some "engineered tapping" with a larger hammer. Haha
You'll probably have to take it off and mess with it.

Garhauer, yes - so far mine has resisted all my attempts to break it
