Re: Longest straight line sail...

Do you think anyone would be crazy enough to sponsor this as a race?

As an independent voyage, it would be a huge challenge.

The line does seem to pass through many national economic zones. Does it come within territorial seas en route?

I love what Noonsite has to say about places along the route such as Tanzania: "Yellow fever vaccination certificate is required. Malaria prophylaxis is recommended. It is not advisable to swim in fresh water, because of the danger of the bilharzia parasite. AIDS is endemic in East Africa. Do not drink tap water."

A steel hull would sound good -- especially if thick enough to stop bullets.

Of course, any plans for such a voyage would probably spawn LOTS of cruising-related Gun, Pirate, Terrorism, Political, and Religious comment threads.....

Actually sailing this route involves a continuously changing heading.

This is a kind of cool image that shows that same line on a map, and shows how distorted a round object gets when displaying it flat.

I'm out. Two of my least favorite cruising experiences.

How can anything be straight when the world is round?

Re: Longest straight line sail...

I think you'd want to do the reverse - from Kamchatka to Pakistan, instead...

Sailing from the Cape of Good Hope to the Drake Passage would most definitely not be done in a 'straight line'...

Nor, would it be much fun :-)

Re: Longest straight line sail...

Mine was 3,200nms from Galapagos to Marquesas. I think its one of the longest cruising passages.
Obviosly the 5 Capes etc are longer but cruisers dont generally do that.... only nuts!

Re: Longest straight line sail...

This is really interesting and indicates the difficulty of using most map projections to show very long great circles. I wonder if anyone will actually try to sail it, gets a little ice bergy at one point, not to mention piraty.

Here is the same route on a Mercator projection.
