Compared to the cost of a long passage, this is always the case. I could rent the sister ship to my boat in the BVI for over a month, for the same cost of getting mine there and back. Longer, given marina costs and likely wear and tear. It just doesn't make financial sense, unless you really plan to cruise extensively.

Yea, was not really thinking of a cruise. I was more thinking of taking the boat down to my father in laws and keeping it there for awhile to mess around in. Better off just renting one while I'm down there.

Re: Lake St. Clair to Florida?

I know this is just a dream question, but start saving. You'll need a kitty just to repair the boat on the voyage. Happens.

When you ask about fastest, you have to define whether you have 24/7 capability. If you do, offshore south of NYC will be fastest, if you have the right weather.

Another consideration on the Erie Canal, other than unstepping at Buffalo and restepping the mast at Albany, is how it will get from Buffalo to Albany. Some rig a carrier on their deck, but it both makes the boat squirrely and hard to move around deck, as the mast is usually much longer than the boat. That's not necessarily ideal when you're negotiating locks with other traffic. When we did this, we had the mast trucked to the other end. Coordinating the cranes, riggers, marinas, trucks, etc, is a real battle plan. It will not just happen, because you're on a schedule. I recall getting out of bed one night at 10pm to get a couple of the players on the phone to kick the program back in place, as the trucker was debating timing with the marina.

We never took more than 1 week off vacation for over 35 years.

Re: Lake St. Clair to Florida?

The trip is pretty much controlled by the New York State Canal schedule it closes first week of November and opens early May. You want to be through the Canal not much later than early October (for a bunch of reasons) and can't get back through til' May.
We usually take 3 months down (lots of exploring), 3 months Florida/Bahamas and 3 months back.

Wow, practically have to take a year off work to get there and back. Guess I aint doin that. Dont think myself or anyone else I know can do that. Plus with the $600 in my savings account, Maybe in forty years. I'll hit ya back in 2040 ish.

Re: Lake St. Clair to Florida?

6 weeks if you don't linger to smell the roses.
1 week to Buffalo
1 week to Cape May
1 week to Norfolk
1 week to Beaufort NC.
1 week to Fernandina Fl
1 week to Ft Laud.

This sched also has no major delays for weather or other issues like closing the Erie canal.
Most of this sched is built on day runs 'inside' except for NJ and Beaufort to Fernandina which can be done in a few one night hops

But I would not try to run that fast. Instead,

August Detroit to Cape May
Sept to late Oct to Norfolk
Nov to Fernandina
Miami by Christmas

Lake St. Clair to Florida?

Just to humor me, and because I would like to make the trip one of these years. Roughly how long would it take to get to southern Florida from Lake St. Clair? 30 foot Tartan not taking our time but not racing. Taking the fastest route. Would anyone know a dollar figure for mast stepping/unstepping, gas, etc... Just a ballpark. I know some of you cruisers could take a guess or have made the trip.
