Re: Hawaii to SF question

Great advice--Bought the first book recommended and already own the other one. Good youtube blog as well--helpful. Already contacted the marinas suggested in a previous post and while they are honest about availability, they've been pleasant and helpful. Looking forward.

Much thanks to all.

I sailed the Hawaiian Islands for 2.5 years and was never "scared". We anchored on every island from Kauai to Hawaii multiple times w/o any problems;I don't remember ever dragging, anywhere.
The channels can be challenging, but in no way dangerous, unlike a norther in the Gulfstream.
Indeed, the return to the west coast is a difficult sail, but if one follows the recommended route for the time of the year of the sail, and not cutting through the Pacific high, certainly much safer than a bad crossing from Newport to Bermuda.
The cakewalk from California to Hawaii is such a pleasant voyage; it's definitely worth the return trip, IMO.

Re: Hawaii to SF question

Well first I'v never done it and probabaly never will. I prefere to stick to the coast.
i was looking a aquiring a boat in S California and bringing to BC.
conventional wisdom is to go to hawwaii and then from hawaii to BC. Rather than sail up the coast against the wind.
I sailed up the coast against the wind but only from Oregon.

So if you go to Hawwaii from S California wind is behind you. to return ither beat back against the prevailing wind or Head for Jaun de fuca. stop in washington or BC then head South with wind behind you to california.

look into "cruising lealea" on you tube. they've done it a few times on a much smaller boat. There's plenty of info day-by-day. I think they have a blog you can follow and communicate with them on. Oh, and don't listen to the nay sayers, they just don't know any better.

This is good advice.

Read pages 288/289 in World Cruising Routes

There are several threads discussing sailing to and from Hawaii on CF - Google "hawaii site:www.cruisersforum.com"

Go do it - I wish I had while I was living on the left coast.

Stupid question. I mean that with all due respect, but why wouldn't you sail to Hawaii? If you want that experience, go for it. My question is, why would you sail back to California? Why not just keep going?
I realize this doesn't answer your question at all, but just thought I'd throw it out there for you.

Not sure what to say. I've sailed a bunch of coasts, East and West, but never to Hawaii. I don't do it to feel safe. I want to take my boat to Hawaii and have some time to do it. Just trying to get some wisdom from people who've made the trip home.

Hawaii to SF question

I've got a good idea of what sailing to Hawaii from SF will be like, and how long it may take, but I'm not sure of the trip back. I'm in a 37 ft, 13 ton, full keel, 6ft draft, double-ender hoping to sail most the way back, even if it means heading North by North East. Does anybody have a realistic idea of wind, time frame, how far North, etc. to make the trip home from Hawaii with minimal motoring?

Thank,
Tony
