Re: Universal M5411 Engine 11HP

my thanks to all for great information. I do not own a sailboat, yet, I but am looking primarily in Maine after taking sailing lessons at "Sail Maine". Learned a lot and so much more to learn but looking forward to owning my own boat. I greatly appreciate you experienced in put on the Catalina engine.

Re: Universal M5411 Engine 11HP

I have a 31ft boat, about the same dimensions as the C30 (but less beamy with a more pointy bow), with the 5424. I always cruise at about 1/2 throttle, which gives just over 6 kts. Recently I was powering into a chop to make the last 1/2 mile into a marina, and the boat was slowing down to 5 kts. Now and then you'd get 2 or 3 larger waves in succession, and the speed would drop off to 4 kts or less.

I think 24hp is about right.

I've sailed a Catalina 27 with the 11hp, and that felt a bit underpowered.

In our case with our 5411, we would have gladly put up with the limited power if we could ensure that when we turned the key it started. There were others issues that a raw water-cooled engine of that age had and we got tired of being nickle and dimed and waiting for parts that were no longer available (even through Kubuta) to be machined.

Something to keep in mind when you try compare boats and engines is that less than half of the boats out there actually have a Correctly-Pitched prop that will actually put All he available hp to the water.
If this is the older Catalina with the engine under the port settee, it put the shaft near to being parallel to the waterline. That's more efficient than boats with a steeper shaft angle from an engine mounted further aft.

Another thing: the boat you are referencing is near in aux. power to the C-30's with the Yanmar YSM-12. It was also a great engine.

When people talk about having enough power to overcome a chop, OTOH, this is different than powering along in smooth water.
While a smaller engine will drive the boat to 6 kts in smooth water (abso-fricken-lutely), it will always be true that having more hp will be better to maintain speed against a chop. Any engine around 18 to 23 hp will certainly do that.

All engines will have their limits of effectiveness-- that Catalina model has a lot of fullness in the bow sections -- makes it real roomy inside but also is a "squarer" shape to force through a steep chop.

Back to basic speed, IF anyone tells you that their boat will not achieve 6 kts in smooth water, with a clean bottom, they Very Likely have a problem that is NOT related to their engine size.

So do not be afraid of owning an older Catalina with the smaller diesel. Spend your restless nights worrying about spongy decks, blown-out sails, and ancient standing rigging that's 15 years overdue for replacement.

Re: Universal M5411 Engine 11HP

As the others have said, the 5411 that was original to the C30 was under powered except at slack and near-slack tide. While it worked, we did have many moments when we wished we had a more powerful engine. Because of that and other issues we had with the 30 YO engine, we bought a new engine.

Re: Universal M5411 Engine 11HP

While I don't own a CAT, I do own a "beamy" 31' boat that was built in the early 80's. It's "standard" engine was the 5411. The option was the 5424 (which is what mine has). I can't imagine only having 11 hp for a vessel this size. If you love the boat, you'll have to deal with it, maybe up the power during a refit someday.

Re: Universal M5411 Engine 11HP

I had a Catalina 30. You will be underpowered. I had an M25, and that was the correct size.

You won't be able to make much progress against heavy seas and wind with that engine., and that can be dangerous.

That being said, are there heavy seas and wind where you will be sailing?

Re: Universal M5411 Engine 11HP

thank you for the reply. I think you are correct. I am very new to sailing and it just sounded like low HP. I will check the Cat for details.

Re: Universal M5411 Engine 11HP

My previous boat (Cal 9.2) had one. While a 30 footer, its lighter than the Cat30. I would guess the 5411 is not quite enough power except in calm conditions. Try checking the Cat30 owners site for some first hand experience.
