Thats the exact kind of info I was looking for. Walking to a hardware store might be just what we need to do to keep the boat off a trailer. Shakedown runs are tough and you never know what to expect, even after an extensive inspection. Good for you on all your off season work and happy sailing,

Buzzards Bay to Cape Ann

I agree with most of the other posts, it's cold and there are few services, I would install a cabin heater, rent the epirb from Boat US and bring a dinghy/raft, just in case. I delivered a sailboat from Boston to RI in last November and it was cold. Approaching the Cape Cod Canal from the south, better than Onset, for approach is The Pocasset River just, North of Wing Neck is an easy in the dark with at least 8 feet at low tide. Up the river 1/8 of a mile in is Bucky Barlow's boatyard to starboard and a Bourne town landing to port, just before the Shore Road Bridge. It is quiet, protected and, at that time of the year, the Town Landing is not in use.(Free overnight?) Walking south on Shore Road, for 1/8 of a mile is a store, gas station, hardware store and diner. At the north end of the canal is the Harbor of Refuge. Plenty of off season docks and their is a Stop&Shop walkable from the harbor with other sevices in the plaza. The Stop&Shop has a head in the store, no shower. Twenty five miles north of the canal is Situate, just before heading off shore to clear Cape Ann. It is a great harbor, easy night approach, good holding just inside and year round services with some off season short term tie ups possible. The last is Gloucester year round port good holding just inside the Eastern Point Bar and deeper in the harbor at Stage Fort Park plus year round dockage fuel and food. Hope these ideas are helpful. These are all places I have been in off season.

This all looks like good advice except that Wickford is farther out of the way than Newport is.

Wickford vs Newport ?

Contrary to what PAULK mentioned about Wickford or Newport for a stopover - Wickford (where I keep my boat) is about 5 miles up the West Passage of NGBay while Newport is only about 1 mile up the East Passage of NGBay. So Wickford, while most definitely better protected, is at least 10 miles wasted while Newport is only about 2.

greggus Mattapoisett is wide open to the NorthEast winds, sailing up another hour or so to Marion would provide a better night's sleep. Barden's boat yard is right next to the town landing. From there it's an hour and a half to the canal entrance.
If you hit the timing right you can sail through BuzBay and stay overnight in Sandwhich on the East end of the canal before taking off for your straight shot to Miane. I am cold just thinking about it.

Fareast Ryan,

I too have a sailboat in Deep River, which boat is yours? While I was also one of the last boats out, they will have to move me around because I will not be ready to go in until probably mid may or so. lots of work. I will be moored in Deep River, good luck on your trip. We brought the boat over from Warwick RI in November and hit some pretty snotty weather in Block Island Sound as well as in Watch Hill passage.

xjgeneral Demek, I have also done that passage on a stand up jet ski but it was in jan. It was fine but when the engine let go it was slow going. It was kinda cold but I ducked in an anchorage and got my wits about me and paddled up to cundy's. The cape dory I was refering to was old and I'm not sure what it was. All I remembered was the built-in pot catchers and bucking bronco steering. Maybe I should have been on a fin keel boat...That way I could have out run the storms.

xj, sounds like one hell of a trip. I did that trip a few years back on my windsurfer--it took me 5 days, and March was pretty cold. You should let me know if you need a hand, I would like to see what that trip is like in a REAL boat. One more thing, in one of your replies you refered to a Cape Dory 24, I've heard of a 22, 25 and 25d, among others, but never a 24. Could you elaborate on the 24?-------------Damek

xjgeneral I would agree, It is a little early for this sail however we do not take our boats out of the water in Maine and sail at least once every month of the year. Last month I was hanging from the trapeze of our Tempest @ 17*F and 25 kts. Last week we were on the Cape Dory 24 with fresh air. Dressing warm makes the temp. almost irrelevant to a point and anything past that point is taken care of by rum and whiskey. All of the links have been a help and thank you all for the help, Ryan
