Ocarina II If you own an older boat, than I suggest 'This Old Boat' by Don Casey, subtitled 'How to take a run down fibreglass boat and turn it into a first class Yacht'.
I learned more about how to sail a boat from a little old book called 'Sail it Flat' than any other guide. It was written by a world champion Sunfish sailor and its simplicity made it very understandable.

nolatom I would've said almost 10 years ago (when this thread started!) that any "pretty good" sailing book will work, "best" is nice but somewhat subjective, don't worry if you have the "right" book as long as it explains the basics.

Just read it, then go out and sail lots, on lots of boats, in lots of places, in lots of differing conditions. Then you'll know how to sail. It really won't matter which book you used.

Books only take you so far.

CaptMikey "Annapolis and Chapman's are good and cover everything, but without a doubt "Sailing for Dummies"is the best for beginners. Also the ASA has one called "Sailing Made Easy".

carl762 The Complete Sailor by David Seidman is an excellent book. I, too, like the Sailing for Dummies book and Chapmans is the ultimate bible.

ben_carter In my opinion the best sailing book for beginners still is

What''''s the best book on sailing for beginners

A free begginers primer page from a boat vendor.

http://www.macgregor26.com/how_to_sail.htm

Chapmans is the bible for safety, rules of the road, navigation, how to anchor, etc. but my old version is marginal on sailing technique. Web sites from sail makers seem to have good info on them.

What''''s the best book on sailing for beginners

If still in print, The Glennan Sailing Manual. Try the Armchair Sailor for a copy.

What''''s the best book on sailing for beginners

My first vote goes for Sailing for Dummies. Then Chapman''s. The Dummies book is friendly, informative, and just plain understandable - especially if you''re reading it in the winter
