I should have been motivated by all your good winter maintenance
projects but I wimped out and spent most of the deep winter making tid bits that kept me warm indoors like...
bunch of soft shackles (some with tubular webbing for chafe).
custom towing line for dinghy, attaches to lifting eyes in transom.
bridle and lifting harness for dinghy.
finally made mooring bridle that will travel with boat so no
nasty mooring lines will come on board.
light weight bungy with clips, that runs from port toe rail to mast to starboard toe rail(or lifeline) to keep jib sheets from fouling on open
forward hatch.
When I finally came out of hibernation...installed 2nd bow roller
and serviced/rebuilt 2 jib sheet winches
Boats in the water 2 weeks now and still more on
my winter list...maybe next winter will be mild...I'm going sailing!

Thanks, jimgo, but I think we're talking about two different things. My mast has no tabernacle, so it doesn't pivot on its own. The Catalina 27 video shows what I'd have to do - first lift the mast off the step, then lower it down "bodily", not pivoting it. I had a tabernacle on my PSC25, and my son and I brought it down easily, without any frame or gin pole, just using a halyard run to a block at the bow and then aft.

Yesterday I did notice that my mast has a hole all the way through the base, as if someone had set it up to pivot (?) somehow. Although I'm going to try to work on the spreader bases by climbing up there once the weather breaks, perhaps later on this year I'll see about making a tabernacle - two L-shaped flat pieces of metal bolted into the wooden mast base and then connected with a bolt through the mast should work.

I'm supposed to leave on my big sailing trip of the year this Saturday, so I'm not really that keen on taking down the mast if I don't have to.

Willy, I used an A-frame to step the mast on my Catalina 25. I had my dad and my brother there to help me, but I could easily have done it with only one other person. Heck, with a good brace to "catch" the top of the mast, I think I actually could have done it by myself. Although the frame may seem flimsy, remember that all it is doing is keeping the mast from moving from side to side. The forestay and the halyard that you're using will take most of the actual force.

The webbing mast ladder worked just fine - I had a bosun's chair with plenty of pockets, and even if I were not supported by the bosun's chair, you can secure yourself to the mast. It was plenty easy to get stuff done.

I set up the A-frame this afternoon, but it looks kinda flimsy. I think I may skip the unstepping. Instead I'll just run halyards to the toerails, loosen the upper shrouds, and remove the spreader bases to work on them in situ. If the weather were cooperating and I had an unlimited supply of eager helpers, I'd double the 2X4s of the frame and maybe then go about unstepping the mast.

I like the mast ladder, but I'm unsure how you do any work from it, because there's nothing to hold you up there once you've arrived at the desired height.

Sorry to hear about the damage, but happy that you've caught it in time. The joys of owning a small boat, is that you're unstepping the mast with buddies, and it's a cheap (relatively) exercise.

I had a friend help me climb the mast on Saturday - I climbed a homemade mast climbing thing (like this), and he hauled on a halyard attached to my bosun's chair. I discovered that the bolts holding the brackets my spreaders are attached to on the mast were in less than perfect shape - the forward one has no head, and the aft one is missing a nut - I'm not sure a) why my rigger didn't point this out when he was up there last, because I'm sure it was in the same condition then, and b) why the spreaders haven't just fallen off.

I rigged an A-frame, the plans for which I found on-line (along with a video), and plan to have a couple neighbors help me unstep the mast today or tomorrow so I can repair the spreader bases and also work on some stuff at the masthead.

There should be an injunction issued against me doing any sort of carpentry. I thought I'd be industrious and make myself some bookshelves out of mahogany and marine plywood I got for $1 from Fairwinds marina, but the results are less than stellar. Oh well, at least I now have a bookshelf on my bulkhead, where before there was none.

I also came up with a new definition. TOOLBOX: a place for storing tools when there is no deep water around.

I bought some rope to make my own boat fenders, based on the instructions in The Marlinspike Sailor. While searching for alternate plans, I ran across this article in Popular Mechanics that shows how an oil company made outboard oil bottles that could be re-used as small boat fenders, a pretty cool idea.

Today I'm planning to finish glassing in the lower part of my companionway and finish the mahogany companionway frames, also made from scrap lumber.
