when i rebuilt Kimberlite i replaced the stuffing box with a traditional beauty made by spartan. the adjusting nuts are scalloped and made to be adjusted with a big screwdriver and a hammer. works like a charm.
I then installed drip free packing from west marine and have had no drips and no problems for over 10,000 ocean miles.

I had the Lastdrop on my 39'' sailboat and it almost sank me! Fortunately I had carried the old stuffing box and was able to change it out while tied to a mooring ball at Catalina Island. After reviewing PYI’s at a boat show, it appeared better constructed than the Lastdrop I tossed over the side. With PYI’s, the shaft can move in and out a bit while maintaining a seal because of the bellows; the Lastdrop was less tolerant and plastic. Needless to say, I’ll keep the old stuffing box with the Teflon packing, it’s forgivable and for shaft alignments or whatever that might lead to disconnecting the shaft from the transmission, I can do it in water and push the shaft back without worry of breaking the water seal.

flax packing with teflon in it.

Yes, I agree, go with the dripless packing.I did it two years ago and have never looked back.
Also, take this to heart. I was motoring my frends Sabre 38 onto the trailer for fall haul-out. After the boat was on the trailer
I noticed water in the bildge. Apiece of wood had fell on the bellows and had let
water into the boat! In a different circumstance this occurance would have
been catastrophic.

I removed a PSS from my boat. At a certain RPM engine vibrations would cause serious leaking. Also the potential for a catastrophic bellows failure kept me awake at night when away from the boat.

Consider "Drip-Less" moldable packing. It is a blue putty stuff that goes between 2 rings of flax in your standard packing gland. No drips, 1 adjustment in 2 years.

I also installed a PSS shaft seal on my Pearson equipted with a v-drive about 8 years ago. In my opinion it is the best money I''ve spent on the boat. No fuss no muss. With the V-drive I could never get at the stuffing box to adjust properly. I''m always amazed after relaunching that the thing just keeps working as promised.

Last year we installed one of the PYI shaft seals in my friends boat and it worked just as advertised. I installed one in my boat 7 years ago, no problems. The face seal technology is “old coffee”, that is to say it has been around for more than 50 years. At the beginning of each season, I put a screwdriver on the hose clamps to check that they are tight, that''s all the maintenance that is required. Don''t worry, be happy and drip free!

Most people who have them like them. But be sure to inspect it on a regular basis. If it does fail, it does so in a catastrophic manner -- meaning the boat will sink unless you happen to be right there. I was going to put one on my boat and a yard hand talked me out of it because of the new teflon and Gore-tex stuffing box materials. They are a lot cheaper and just as effective at keeping a dry bilge, albeit with a bit more maintenance. Their main advantage of course is that they have no rubber bellows to blow out unexpectedly, creating a flow of water the bilge pump wasn''t designed to handle.

Experience with Dripless Shaft Seals

We had an original Lasdrop and could never get it to stop leaking. I understand they have changed owners since then and also made improvements. We now have a PYI Shaftseal on our present boat (Hinckley B-40); had it installed along with a flexible coupling, new motor mounts, new cutlass bearing and a three-blade Classic MaxProp. I would rate the improvement a definite 10 on a 10-star system. Zero problems in about 4 years of use except when I didn''t service the MaxProp as I should have (my fault, not the equipment). Also have a friend who installed a MaxProp in conjunction with a PYI ShaftSeal in his 58'' Phil Rhodes and he too is very satisfied with the expenditure. Definitely not a waste of funds. The PYI ShaftSeal rates very highly - no muss, no fuss.
