Re: Tartan 31 or 28?

What are your goals with the boat? Does seem to be a very specific item to make a choice on a boat. I would venture to guess that most boats have chainplates mounted on the bulkhead. Makes for easy inspection! Biggest issue I see is that if there is leakage, you can wind up with some rotting. As long as this bulkhead is solid and well tabbed, should not be an issue. The one thing I do not like at all is chainplates that are fiber glassed in, they allow no inspection and it creates a perfect place for crevice corrosion. So for me it is best if they are visible for inspection. I also don't like when they are behind lots of cabinetry, easy to forget about them.

Tartan 31 or 28?

Hi,
I am looking at a Tartan 31 and a 28.

One of biggest concerns is the chainplates on the 31. It looks like bulkhead mounting compared to the stainless strap in the T28 that is secured to the inside of the hull.

Are there problems with the Tartan 31 chainplates? The few boats I have seen photos of all "look" fine and most of them are more than 20 years old.

I like the 31 a bit better, there is more room in there. The 28 is nice as I could use the flu keel just about anywhere.

Anyway, if anyone has some first hand experience on the boats I would appreciate any feedback. Hoping to go ahead with offers next week.

Thanks,
Dave
