Ed,

That is certainly true, and ASA has made it more difficult over the past few years for the small operator to function as a "school", requiring for example that any school must have a physical store-front location. I also seem to remember they said an ASA school could not also offer US Sailing certs. Anyway, recent practices have served to weed out the number of small operators, sort of like culling the herd. But as I said, even when attending an ASA school, ASA still works off the signature of the approving ASA-certified instructor, this being the unique value of such instructor certifications.

Re: ASA instructor certification?

I have a new arrow in my quiver.

ASA did the crossover from Sail Canada for 201, 203, 204, 205, and 206. I passed the 214 exam yesterday.

The only exception that I don't think anyone has mentioned is that, if neither you, nor the boat's owner, are receiving any consideration for providing the lessons, then you don't need to have a USCG license.

True dat. But generally lessons leading to any kind of certificate involve money being paid, directly or (in my case) indirectly to the capt/instructor.

Anyone can, of course, teach their friends to sail (it's encouraged ;-). And sharing expenses for that type of sail doesn't constitute "consideration", says the Coast Guard.

Hmmm

San Francisco is one of my favourite US cities. I have been there a couple times. I have even sailed on the Bay.

I am corresponding with an IE to find out what I need to do.

The school is talking about a clinic in the spring. They have a couple of cats, I might be able to do something then. A one day trip to Sausalito is pretty prohibitive.
