Ray

That is very useful information. The fix is well within the distance traveled.

I may be looking at one or two.

I am checking out the possibilities of a delivery of a catamaran from Tortola to Sidney, BC.

Re: Seminar at Vancouver Boat Show

The video I watched said the range was about 4 NM for power boats and the fix time was around a minute IRCC.

Re: Seminar at Vancouver Boat Show

Hi Ray

That personal AIS has some possibilities. Having been in 12-15 foot seas, I have serious concerns about trying to find someone in those conditions. If it happened at night it would be even more frightening. The MOB button in the plotter will get you back to where you pushed the button, the personal AIS would track the COB.

I wonder how long it takes to get a fix? And what is the accuracy of that? As VHF is line-of-sight, what is the range?

Re: Seminar at Vancouver Boat Show

That's cool Jack.

Hey, I was looking at PLB's the other day and came across a new COB product that the wet guy activates and it sends an AIS signal to the dry guys. Having listened to the Coast Guard broadcast appeals for "more information" on situations that sound like they need a response, I thought that would be a pretty cool tool to have clipped on one's PFD, as it sounds like if you want to get dry again, the boat you left is probably your best bet. What are your thoughts?

Seminar at Vancouver Boat Show

I am going to do a presentation at the Vancouver Boat Show.

12:30 PM
Room 3
Jack Dale
Rescue Me – Are You Ready?
Yachtmaster Offshore Cruising Instructor / Instructor Evaluator

The "blurb":

Jack Dale
"Rescue Me – Are You Ready?"

Jack was the return delivery skipper on Turicum, a Vic - Maui boat, during a medical evacuation to an 1100 foot container ship 1040 miles north of Hawaii in August, 2012. The presentation discusses both the evacuation, with video from our perspective and from the container ship, and the role of the Automated Mutual-assistance VEssel Rescue System (AMVER) in marine rescues.

Jack Dale has sailed for 30 years. In that time he was accrued over 36,000 miles. 10,000 miles of that are passages including three Vic-Maui returns and a delivery from Newport RI to St Barths via Bermuda. He has circumnavigated Vancouver Island 12 times, once on the 2007 Van Isle 360. His race experience also includes 3 Swiftsure races. His cruising grounds have included Turkey, the Caribbean, the Bahamas, and the Pacific North West. For the past two decades Jack has been a cruising instructor.

If any SN folks are around, I would love to put a face to usernames.

I am only there for the day. I have to get back home to referee a squash tournament.

Jack
