Re: Effective remedies for the no-see-ems

We have found the Thermacell Repellant reasonably effective. Place one or two of these on the floor of the cockpit and another to the side of the top step into the companionway and you can create a reasonably bug free envelope. Just ensure you have replacement repellant pads handy.

Mistolin lavanda
It's Latin American dish washing liquid. Put some in when washing clothes. Seems to keep bugs off. Has strong lavender smell. Make sure your honey likes the smell first. Lavender is said to make people calm so
Keep calm. Sail on.

Re: Effective remedies for the no-see-ems

I usually use a spray bottle with 50-50 water and Skin So Soft. Not so hot with mosquitoes but great on any gnat type critter like no-see-ums.

Re: Effective remedies for the no-see-ems

40% DEET or lately I've had good luck with Lemon Eucalyptus which is a lot less noxious and maybe safer. I keep a good supply of fine mesh netting aboard and have it on all my hatch screens. It does not allow for as much ventilation as regular mosquito netting but does keep all the little critters out. When the greenheads are thick, the best thing to do is be aware and whack 'em. They're slow. Electronic fly swatters are fairly effective for normal houseflies and those little annoying, non-biting flies. Pants and long sleeves also work. I have some 100% DEET that works when mountain biking in high Black Fly season but it tends to melt any plastic you touch:-) Black Flies are the worst of the bunch, followed by Deer Flies. Blood sucking ^%&*_@$!

I purchased the lawn tent replacement from Wallmart, cost about $30 at the time, works great but can be a PITA to put in place when it's windy. I hold it down with fishing sinkers.

For the screens I use a light application of Skin So Soft and they don't get remotely close to it. Same for my arms and face, but that stuff is a bit oily. My wife says I smell kinda girlie.

We have no-see-ums up here in the FL panhandle as well. I generally use OFF I believe (orange/white bottle)...but a lot of the folks where we keep our boat swear by using Avon Skin So Soft.

We also use citronella candles if anchored and the wind is calm...amazing how many find there way into the melted wax...but better than our skin!

Re: Effective remedies for the no-see-ems

I'm a bit skittish about DEET. The Wikipedia article has some interesting stuff:

Article cites a study that suggests eucalyptol*, linalool, and THUJONE! as acting similarly to DEET. I knew there was a damn good reason to drink absinthe (contains thujone)

*see above post regarding Listerine ingredients

Re: Effective remedies for the no-see-ems

I live in the no-see-um capital of the world. As it happens, they love me best of all. I use copious amounts of DEET based spray. It is the only thing that I have found effective.

Re: Effective remedies for the no-see-ems

Reviving this thread with some things I've heard about:

Listerine. Makes sense, ingredients include: active ingredients listed on Listerine bottles are essential oils which are menthol 0.042%, thymol 0.064%, methyl salicylate 0.06%, and eucalyptol 0.092%.

I've incidentally found that lavender essential oil seems to do some good. I put it in coconut oil to knock the coconut smell, but I think it keeps the noseeums away

I don't know whether all mosquito coils are created equal, but I can say that the Japanese coil 'katori-senko,' brand pictured below, are excellent, if not cheap:

almost forgot: inside the cabin, we have found the OFF! fan to be effective - we clip it above our bunk
