BTW, here's a photo of a C&C 38, and on my friend's boat, which this is not, the engine compartment blower and intakes are located under the hump along the stern cockpit coaming that you can see through the wheel in this photo.

"A 4" hole could fill a boat pretty quickly" You mean, everybody doesn't have ball valves or fill plates handy, to secure their engine compartment vents in rough weather?!
