He wont be racing with a CDI furler! I've been told that using a UV protector with anything other than Dacron sails can damage the sail by overheating it causing it to shrink unevenly. We use a harken furler with pentex sails but we always remove them after the race and store below.
The cost of. changing the tape will depend on the size of the luff. A few years back. I had a sailmaker change the tape on a headsail with a 30' luff and it only cost $200 or so. Mylar wont be a very good choice for a long lasting sail as SD points out the laminated construction has some issues.

|sailingdog||Mylar sails aren't really good general purpose sails yet... They are more subject to UV degradation and have some other issues due to their laminated construction. It really depends on a few things, like what kind of sailing you'll be doing, and whether you'll be racing, what area of the world you're sailing in, etc...|

Sail modifications for a CDI furler
I recently bought a new sail on ebay, (it was made by Skip Moorhouse and is diamond cut with radial corners using technora (black aramid) and mylar front sections, with tafida in wear areas) . It currently has #5 luff tape and piston hanks. I am considering adding a CDI FF2 Flexible Furler, but it requires #6 luff tape. Has anyone ever had a sailmaker change out the luff tape and add a sunbrella cover. I'm curious as to the approximate costs and whether or not this type of sail would make a good permanent, all-around head sail.
