Sydney to the Med

I am based in Macau, China. Right now my boat is in Lisbon Portugal. I am planning to sail across the Atlantic this October to the caribbeans thru the Panama Canal and up the north American west coast to Canada. I am looking forward to start cruising again, the sea calls!

Sydney to the Med

Dear Engledow,
Yes, I did sail from Macau, China to the Med
thru Thailand,Sri Lanka,Maldives,India,
Indian Ocean,Red Sea,Mediterranian Sea to Portugal, during Nov. 1999 to Aug. 2000. It was a lot of fun, and a lot of endurance sailing up th Red Sea, with the wind always on the nose around 30 knots. And prepare yourself of a lot of motoring and patience for at least 1 1/2 to 2 months.
Yes the threat of pirates at the entrance of the Red Sea is real. We were lucky not to encounter any, but at the same time heard from the radio that 3 sailing yachts were attacked by pirates at the time we were sailing into ''Aden''. We were sailing close to the north shore close to the ''Arabian Penninsula''. Those yachts were sailing to ''Djibouti'', north of the African shore.
I would strongly advice you to sail near the Arabian Pennisula when you approach the entrance of the Red Sea.
If you want more info for this route do not hasitate to email me, I would be glad to help.
Good luck and good sailing!

Sydney to the Med

I am planing to sail from Sydney to the Med through Indonisia, Thailand, Red sea in 6 months time. Everyone that I talk to straight away mentions pirates, is this just hype or is there a good chanche of meeting trouble. I know many people untake this trip and would hope most live to tell the tale.
Also any ideas how much passage through the suiz canal costs, or any other usful info Thanks in advance
