Re: Jib Furling

I had a furler on my first boat, Balboa 24 and it was a pain. Swore I wouldn't have one again. The new owner has fixed some issues with it and says it's great. I evidently didn't have it set up right and the forestay was an issue. I might have to rethink it on my Catalina.

Re: Jib Furling

Said I would get back to this post after installing and operating the unit for a while.
It was my first time installing a furler and it took longer and required more help than expected but all is well now. Also my first time sailing with jib furling and I do love it. The unit is smooth and quick. (Blew out the first jib I had modified for it.)
Overall I wonder why it took me so long to make the switch from hanks.

Re: Jib Furling

Thanks for the input folks but the decision has been made. It was between Harken and Schaefer because both are available local. (Shipping arround here is priced out of this world.) I bought the Schaefer because it was on sale last week, in stock, and from what I have read it is one of the simplest to install. I also like the fact the luff track is a two piece moulding that only has joints on the vertical. ie A front and back piece that snap together to give a continuous track for the luff. Next season I will post my experience and opinion of the system. (Wish me luck and thanks again

Re: Jib Furling

As the current owner of a Harken unit, and a former owner of a Furlex unit while the Harken to date works fine, IMHO it is not as solidly engineered as the comparable Furlex. If buying, I'd pay the premium for a Furlex.

Re: Jib Furling

Furlex is probably most geared to a self install, and includes a new forestay too.. never a bad idea on an older boat unless you know it's been done already.

Re: Jib Furling

Have you considered Furlex by Selden?

Jib Furling

I am going to add jib furling to my C27 this season. I have been looking at Shafer and Harkin, leaning toward Shafer (spelling???)
Anyone have experience, comments, or suggestions I would like to hear them.
