Congratulations on your obtaining your licenses.
I'm an instructor at Rhema Training Center here in Lafayette, LA. Teaching OUPV, 100 & 200 ton Mate/Master.
I hold a 1600 ton Master / 2nd Mate unlimited with ARPA radar, GMDSS, STCW and A/B unlimited.
Sailed as 3rd & 2nd Mate, 1600 Ton Master and A/B & Bosun. My 1st commercial license was a 100 ton Master back in Feb. 1979 after 21 years in the Navy as a Boatswain Mate with NECs in Damage Control, Mine Sweeping and Craft Master. My 2nd license was 3rd Mate unlimited.
Have worked around the world and there are many places I haven't been to yet. Capt'd Dinner/cruise boats, a Stern wheeler, Factory Fishing vessels, and assorted Work Vessels in the Gulf of Mexico. Mate on Research vessels, Unrep Tankers and cargo ships. Also as an A/B on research vessels and as mate also.
But working as instructor right now and it is satisfying for now. But I do meet a few dunder heads. Won't go there.
But the main thing is I always worked on the sea. Always had a roof over my family's head and food on the table. And more involve in my family's life when I was home then most stay at home fathers ever were.
My age?? I am 26 years old with 4 decades of experience of being 26.
Well that is what I tell myself when I look in the mirror... refuse to acknowledge that old man that I see there.
Will roll my license again in March of 2010

One of the principle attractions to the port of Baltimore is the abundant lack of "Massholes".(g)
On a more serious note, the port of Baltimore is much more congested, as compared to Boston, with commercial ship traffic. Most shipping lines do not even call Boston any longer. Largely due to the longshoremen. (where did you think the term "Masshole" came from?)
Well, I count four exams. 3/M, 2/M, C/M, and Master. All Oceans, unlimited tonnage, steam or motor. The only one I ever had to renew is the Master's.

I took it at marinaschool.com office in Princton, NJ. They do hold classes in other states. They give the exams also. The instructors proctor the exams. They point out the "sandbox" questions i.e. the ansswer is not obvious but since it is their "sandbox"(USCG) then to play in it you need to know their answer. I took all the paperwork down to Baltimore & had the oath administered & fingerprinted by the 'slab' method.
After 5 weeks, 3 pieces of paper were returned for corrections(1 m mistake, 1 the nurse, 1 their oversite re. a reference letter date.), did all the corrections & then the license came several week later. Started the process in November & the license came end of May.
Also, had to send a copy of the license NOT the course completion cert(57 hrs) to NJ for their 'Boating Safety Course' cert(8 hr course with a test!.
This year NJ requires ANYONE younger than 49 who is behind the wheel to have a BSC cert otherwise $500. Next year I think 10 years older than EVERYONE after June 1, 2009.

Chris, yes as I understand it you will first have to get a license for inland waters, and then if you accumulate enough time to qualify for coastal or ocean you can upgrade your license. For Master 100 tons or less you need to be able to show 360 days in command of at least 4 hours each day. The next upgrade is 360/8hrs and then up to 720 etc. I think you can go all the way back to age 18 for your seatime, but have to have a certain number of hours within the last three years(I'm forgetting this stuff already!) I'm looking at doing that myself. Thing is, I'm on an inland lake in Nashville, TN. Getting ocean time is tough. Do I have to go the route of getting my inland license first and then upgrading once I get some ocean time in... somewhere, somehow? Any suggestions would be great.
I do have my own sailboat, it's just not on the coast...

I agree that volume matters
I had about the same experience as Capng, although I used the Toledo, Ohio office. The folks there told me that every skipper who wants the license before charter fishing season begins applies at the same time in spring.
Since Lake Erie has a shorter season than Charleston, the spring log jam is probebly greater.
By the way, congrats to jrd22 who started this thread.

A happy story
I read a lot of this thread about the CG nightmares. Had to give them a plug here. I applied in Charleston. I walked in at 0730, they printed me (electronically), copied my DL and passport, administered the oath, reviwed my package and I was out the door at 0755. That was on a Thursday - my license was mailed the following Wednesday. Must have something to do with volume.

The classes teach all 1200 questions in the CG bank they draw from. Even if you know everything the questions are so screwed up its tough to pass without the class.
BTW search Al Muthana, you will find UN weapons inspector reports that will make you shudder. I returned in January from entombing tens of thousands of tons of "missing CWMs" in Iraq. Al Muthana is the biggest R&D CWM plant and storage facility in Iraq. Been there, seen em, got the weird skin condition to prove it, oh ya and the pics....
