Good series, off to a slow start, my only complaint is I have to wear headphones to hear what Capt. Vane is saying........could be the noises in my head though.

True -- it is well known that pirates, privateers, and sailors in general restricted their oaths to Darn (durn), Poot, Sugar, and GollyGee.

Also, they drank only sweet tea and never blasphemed. They were courteous to women and most had hearts of gold, beneath the smelly exterior. I saw it in Pirates of the Caribbean, by Disney Inc.:laugher

Really? Someone should tell the families of these folks that pirates don't exist. Or the crew of the Alabama. Peruse this list, if you please:

Recourse to convoy and escort tactics have dampened activity in the Gulf of Aden for the nonce, but the conditions underpinning piracy still exist. If cost-cutting shipping execs lose interest, the men with guns in fast boats will return.

Now we are seeing pirating of commercial shipping off Africa's West Coast. There have also been boardings, beatings, thefts, hostage-taking, and other activities meeting the definition of piracy in Guatemala, Panama, Costa Rica, Indonesia, and yes, the Caribbean. Some of these are addicts looking for drug money; others are part of organized crime networks. Piracy has always occurred on multiple scales, from Greek fishing boats seizing even smaller vessels to full-on, state-sponsored rovers -- public/private venture capitalists.;) It thrives on opportunism. And it is no more extinct than pickpocketing.
