New Guy Needs Help!

Hey All! I''ve been sailing a bit with my friend, but I just got my first boat (16'' Hobie). There''s a couple soft spots on the tops of the hulls, nothing bad, but I have the time to work on it so I''d like to. What I''d like to do is to fix those and then repaint it (the entire hulls) or gelcoat it...I''m not really sure which to do or what exactly a gelcoat even is?? I read about injecting West Systems epoxy and filler into the top of the hull to fix the soft spots...any suggestions?? And if someone could tell me all the steps and what I need to use to go about repainting it or whatever after I repair the hulls, i''d really appreciate it. I''d like to keep it light and fast so I don''t want to coat the hulls with all kinds of crap to weigh them down either. Thanks!!
Jeff
